Computer access to my cellphone - neiltoo
I can't access my cellphone through my Laptop (win 8.1)

I could do it some months ago. Last month the phones window came up with the internal storage up, but nothing would show on the SD card. I fooled around with settings, and finally the SD opened up, and I could transfer files.

Trying now the window comes up with the note “this folder is empty” - no access to either the internal files or the SD.

I've tried for some time to break through but to no avail.

Any ideas?

TIA

Android or Apple?

My Android would do that if I ignored the prompt on the phone to say what I wanted it to do ( - file transfer usually!) - the phone would show in Windows Explorer but not the folders.

Or maybe a Windows update blocks the software (though doubtful on Windows 8.1)

If the cause is as Smokie sets out above, it should be (relatively) simple to sort.

Somewhere in the past version upgrades of Android the default when a phone is connected to a computer by USB was set to "charging" (only).

If you connect and don't change this default, then the phone will show up in File Explorer, but internal storage and and SD card (if present) will not.

To resolve this once connected:

With the 'phone unlocked, swipe down from the very top of the screen.

This will show a prompt/notification something like "Charging this device via USB"

Tap that to expand it and it should give "tap for more options"

Tap, and you should then select "File Transfer(/Android Auto)"

....and the folder contents should then be accessible via File Explorer.

It defaults to charging only on each connection.

The principle and basic practice should be the same on your 'phone, mine isn't Samsung so there might be minor variations.

Fantastic!

Many thanks

I hadn't noticed that the message comesup. It's very brief.
