My old (not very) smart Panasonic telly showed a message last night while on BBC iPlayer telling me that from Oct 31 Panasonic will no longer support I-player and I'll have to get a set-top box to continue watching.
I was thinking about a new telly, but I don't think it'll be a Panasonic if they're going to play those sorts of tricks.

its not just panasonic. Anyway, get yourself a firestick and just carry on with iplayer on that

They may not be playing tricks.
Just about every bit of digital kit you have ever owned eventually becomes uneconomic or simply not possible for the manufacturer to update.
Sometimes the inability to update just leaves potential security vulnerabilities but it will still operate. Procesors and memory which may be more than a decade old may simply be incapable of managing increased data volumes and speeds.

Panasonic & Sony no longer make televisions. The same as happened with Toshiba, Sharp etc.
The 4 brands mentioned are now built by 3rd parties. Toshiba is Turkish IIRC.
Panasonic & Sony TVs are Chinese - they get Royalties for the use of the name.
Shame really as I have bought Panasonic & Sony for the last 35/40 years. No repairs , just replaced to get a bit of newer technology.
I believe the leading lights in TVs today are LG & Samsung.
Current Panasonic is 11 years old - bought to get UHD footie when Sky started 4K. SWMBO is quite happy the Panasonic so no new LG OLED for me unless one of my boys give me a new TV for an upcoming "Notable Birthday"

How old? When we moved in to our village 'retirement home' 15yrs ago we inherited a Panasonic Viera connected to a Bose Lifestyle hi-fi system which the previous owners left. (Useful only when better sound quality desired). I guess it's around 18yrs old. It's displayed no such message and still seems to work OK. My only grouse is that it can cause interference noise on the FM radio if both on at the same time.

It's a Panasonic Viera TX-40DS500B LED. The instruction booklet has the date 2016 printed on the back, so I guess it's not older than that.

I have just bought a new LG OLED TV from Richer Sounds to replace my old Panasonic. I ordered a Samsung from the manufacturer and it was a nightmare to use. It was delivered by a couple of East Europeans who were supposed to install it and set it up with my satellite system and Nvidea box. It always opened up with Samsung Plus TV and it was difficult to switch to anything else. I rejected it after three days and ordered an LG from Richer Sounds. A totally different experience and a good price.

Yes we’ve received the same message on our Panasonic. It’s not a big deal to us as we already have a fire stick. We bought it when the TV wouldn’t access ITVX.
For anyone who doesn’t already have one it’s very easy to set up and it sits out of sight attached to a spare port behind the tv. You then simply access your apps by selecting that port on your existing remote. The Fire comes with its own basic remote if you prefer to use that.

We have a 5 year old 48" Sony OLED TV - brilliant picture and sound but, we hardly watch TV really, especially BBC, so why do have to pay £180 a year for something we hardly watch!
I only use the iplayer to watch Escape to the Country, but even then only if it's not a repeat
I've started reading more of the umpteen secondhand books I've bought o'er years, starting with some Daphne Du Maurier.
