 Weymouth - MD
Morning chaps,

Just looking for anyone local to or who has been to Weymouth in the last year or so.

My Daughter (grown woman) and several friends are off there in a couple of weeks time renting an air B&B. Does anybody know the migrant situation in the town as from what I hear about other south coast towns the thought of them in a situation fills me with dread.

Thank in advance……….MD.

I'm pretty sure they'll be ok.

There's a lot of alarmist carp in the media.

Maybe it’s the Bibby Stockholm barge that’s put this in mind. That went and all the occupants were dispersed outside Dorset.
I’ve not been but regularly go to Swanage, the next resort along, and it feels safe. I think what little danger there is would be the from drunken and antisocial behaviour. No worse in Weymouth than many places. The World Cup might affect how lively things are but on the whole the town is not regarded as a problem area.

Weymouth is ok.

No worse than any/most coastal town/s. It's the grubby locals that let these places down, not immigrants (I take it that the OP is referring to immigrants, rather then emigrants? Because surely people that have left Weymouth to go to, say, Australia, would not now have any effect upon Weymouth?)

I think OP is concerned about Asylum Seekers accommodated in the town's hotels.

I did wonder if he was flying a kite (have I got the right expression?)

I suspect it's the rundown, cheap, seaside towns that have an abundance of asylum seekers. Rhyll, Skegness, Yarmouth etc.

There may be a small number, like anywhere in south England, but they won't have arrived by rubber boat, as it's an awful lot further from France than Dover is !

Those arriving via small boats or lorries to the Dover area are dispersed all around the country with a concerted effort to move away from hotels and into Houses in Multiple Occupation.

There is also a fast growing cohort who've come here with a visa for (eg) work or study and who then claim Asylum.

Oh ffs. ( facepalm )

And by the way, was there last year, Weymouth is very pleasant. And Fort Nothe has just opened the cold war bunker that lies beneath.

Couldn't agree more. We've had five enjoyable holidays there. Apart from the usual seaside attractions, there's the relaxing Nothe area above the harbour, the Swannery, Poundbury, the Jurassic Coast, the Military Museum and Hardy's House in nearby Dorchester, etc.

Minkey World is about 18 miles up the road, but we'll be heading there on our next visit.

There are really very few UK seaside places I would rate. From memory they are
Cromer
Southwold
Whitby. (I include Robin Hoods bay, Runswick bay in that)
Brixham
Weymouth
Tenby
Lyme Regis

It needs more than a fab beach (plenty of those around)

Of them all, I think Southwold is the one me wife n dog would say "Yes lets go tomorrow"

At least Rhyl wasn’t in Z’sl list (phew)

I walked, with a friend, the Anglesey coast path 20 years ago, shortly after it opened. My pal was dep editor of an outdoor mag and was commissioned by the Tourist Office to write an article.
From memory it was very nice indeed, and it didn’t rain.
We set up ‘base camp’ in a cottage, drove out to the start point each day, and hitched or used buses to return to car.
I really should return..

I did some that years ago with SWMBO, it tippled down and we got soaked. She refused to do any more of it!
We then did the lake district and the same happened. She won't do them now!
