Looking to build a simple 3x2 Pergola and roof it over my "outdoor kitchen" ie BBQs and looking at either 10mm polycarbonate or the EZ Glaze sheets. www.eurocell.co.uk/roofing/polycarbonate/ezglazeclr25-ez-glaze-60-clear-3mm-thick-polycarbonate-sheet-688mm-x-2-5m
Anyone used these and any pros or cons?
And on a similar question, what is the point of a pergola if its not roofed? Keep seeing folk with a frame in their back gardens and thinking really what is the point of that??

Grow things up and round it?
Ours has a couple Clematis and a rose.

Get the best of both worlds and get one with a retractable covering.
|
|
It would need to be a fully retractable waterproof covering and I suspect they wont be cheap

I suppose you are thinking of the transparency but do you need that?
For a cheap job, OSB3 and roofing felt. For a real bobby dazzler, how about cedar shingles or thatch?
|
|
Yeah I need it for the transparency!

how about cedar shingles or thatch?
Over a barbecue?
Any roof is going to trap smoke and fumes. Barbecues are for outside

You spotted the flaw in my plan. That's when it becomes a bobby dazzler!

If it has a permananet roof, it is no longer a pergola, if you build it with a perpex see through roof, we in the south call it a car port, lean too, or eyesore.
You will regret, in three years time, peering up at the sky through the murkey green fungai and moss infested roof.

Unless your BBQs is commonly used on days when cold, grey, drizzle, downpour etc prevail, why bother with any cover.
If you are really keen for a structure to disguise the BBQ with something pleasing to the eye, just grow climbing plants up the legs and across the top.
