I contacted the council about getting the council tax suspended on a flat I own due to extensive structural works being required. They said that they no longer deal with such matters and that it was now in the hands of the valuation office who would remove the property from the list of dwellings on the council tax list, if the work met certain criteria.

Meeting the criteria is not going to be an issue, but navigating the gov site is. Normally I find gov sites are quite intuitive but this one is the pits and just doesn't seem to go anywhere. I've had a friend who should know take a look and he is equally bamboozled.

Have any of you chaps had any dealings with this lot?

Kind regards......................MD

Looks OK to me but then I know nothing...

This link presumably? www.gov.uk/guidance/removing-a-property-from-the-council-tax-list#deleting-a-property-from-the-council-tax-list-because-it-is-derelict-or-in-disrepair

Hi Smokie,

Ok thank you and I've now clicked on 'properties in disrepair', but where do I go next? I am expecting a box to submit my details and a description of the works etc., but there's nothing that fits the bill unless I'm missing something simple. I even tried phoning, but that's a complete waste of time and one just gets cut off (we're too busy syndrome). Bloomin' tech. Just give me a human.

TIA.............MD

On the page in that link above, go to the section:

"How to request a deletion"

and select the link

"Challenge your Council Tax band: How to challenge"

That will take you elsewhere, and if you follow the

"Start Now"

link it should take you through the process, starting with postcode and then identifying the specific property.

I think this is via the link immediately below the one I suggested, which leads to an online submission rather than the form.
