World Open Snooker Championship - Duncan
World Open snooker just finished. Ronnie O'Sullivan beaten in the final by Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.

In an earlier round O'Sullivan set up a new world record break of 153. Un-Nooh did a maximum of 147 in one of his frames in the final.

Wonderful awards ceremony. Lots of dummy cheques, garlands, medals and speeches in Chinese and English.

All on TNT Sports, which on Thursday changes to HBO Max - or something.

I have enjoyed watching snooker in the past - I remember going to the Crucible (from London!) to watch a game, probably 70s or 80s.

I also enjoy it whenever I et a chance to pay but a break of two balls is something of an achievement for me.

Also remember playing billiards when i was v young, on a smaller table. That was fun too,

I was a passionate player for years and loved the game. I've been to the Crucible and the Masters in London was a regular venue for many years.

There are only two known instances where players have achieved the highest possible break of 155, both in practice. Jamie Cope in 2005 and in 2021 the Thai player Thepchaiya Un-Nooh did the same at a club in Darlington. This is the only time an absolute maximum has been caught on camera, albeit a security camera in this case.

I feel I may have already asked you this RR but I remember going to a snooker club really close to Gants Hill roundabout as a lad, I feel it was on the road leading up to Woodford. Any recollection of it? (I think you are from round that way but apols if I'm wrong!)

There certainly wasn't one at Gants Hill in the seventies or later, the nearest to there was in Barkingside just as you turn into Freemantle Road off the High Street. Now I believe sadly closed, like so many snooker halls in recent years. The Nearest one to me in Fishguard is 70 miles away:-(

Thinking back though, wasn't there a Burtons store at Gants Hill? A lot of their places had a snooker hall upstairs.

The only Burton I can recall is the one just along the Eastern Avenue near Plesseys (site now a B&Q). Still there as well!

I'm thinking this is it, still there and the site says been there over 100 years...

Of course that's the road to Wanstead not Woodford, but it's in about the spot on that road where I'd have put it - on the left a bit before the roundabout.

Used to sneak off there as a 5th/6th former once in a blue moon when I supposed to be doing something else! Interesting cos if I hadn't already asked you, it must have been school mates who I asked, and none of them remembered it either!

Interesting Smokie, I never knew that existed at all.
