 HJ emigrant - John F
Sorry - forgot to introduce myself. Thank you for having me. Was a regular and sometimes contentious poster on HJ (e.g. debunking his anachronistic advice to change engine oil every 365 days whatever the mileage). I'm fascinated by anything mechanical, especially engines. We buy the best value for money mainly up(ish)market cars for as little as possible, keep them as long as possible and service them myself as cheaply as possible (e.g. over 400k miles from two second hand Passat estates for the high mileage family years). Now enjoying low mileage septuagenarian retirement in rural Northants with my old work horse and now 'historic vehicle' (!) 1980 TR7 DHC bought in 1981 for £4250, and retirement 'forever car' 2005 Audi A8 W12 sport quattro bought in 2014 for £12,000.

Mrs F has the priciest car we've ever bought (although the £13k for a nearly new Passat 2.0GL auto estate in 1994 was relatively more), a last of the line new 2019 mk1 Peugeot 2008 Allure Premium 1.2 EAT6 130, £17k 'on the road'.

I'm familiar with your oeuvre from HJ. Pleased to see you here.

Thank you Manatee. I've just had a nostalgic visit to the HJ forum to remind myself about something and discovered that if I search using my moniker under 'author....all time' it shows every thread I've initiated - but of course none of my sometimes contentious responses when I challenged the advice and opinions of other posters. It seems my first tentative post was in 2002!

If anyone's interested in my historic motoring facts and figures this seven year old thread will embellish my introduction message, and perhaps convey an idea of the (usually) amicable pub-like banter and tone of the HJ backroom of yore.
