How many times was Lord Mandelson sacked, prior to his most recent sacking?

So far as I can see twice.
First in 1998; failure to disclose a loan from Geoffrey Robinson.
Second in 2001; passports for the Hinduja's
I think there were allegations swirling around while he was an EU commissioner.
When he was re-appointed by Brown I was in a Barber's shop in London where a TV ran rolling news. I had to explain my rude words laden response to the Ozzy lass who was cutting my locks....

Makes Trump’s State visit somewhat problematical. No US Ambassador and a meeting with Keir Starmer who has just sacked Mandelson over emails which are less revealing than the evidence against Trump in the Epstein affair.
|
It's the mingling with royalty that Trump likes - isn't it?
The politics come a poor second.
|
So he's gone then. That's 3 times.
I could never like him. I don't know him, maybe he's delightful, but he gave me the impression of not being the sort of chap one would lend money to (although someone notoriously did)
He comes across as one of those somewhat hubristic people who think they are cleverer than everybody else. A bit of the old Dunning Kruger. And the resigning matters are suggestive of poor judgement.
That said I would not criticise him simply for knowing Epstein and believing himself to have been a friend - a lot of people seemingly did. A bit like Jimmy Savile whose admirers included Mrs Thatcher and Prince Charles.

I wonder who next will have Starmer saying they've got his full support?
|
|
Haha yeah, so often those words are the kiss of death in politics...

One wonders what it takes to become a lord.
I’m thinking of Lord Archer ?

Archer was made a Life Peer in 1992.
You just need to be in favour with the folks in power.

Never trusted his moustache

I think he is a smooth operator, very useful to have in the government. The problem I had with him in the past was that he has few other discernible areas of basic expertise.
Several years ago he had responsibilities for technology I attended an address he gave, reading from a script, to some of the top execs (I was a bag carrier) in the U.K. telecoms industry. His topic was the then very topical ADSL rollout. The problem was he called it “ASDL” using this wrong term dozens of times. Very cringe-worthy.
I wonder if he drives a BWM.

Fair criticism from cleverly.
This morning its reported the security services raised issues with the appointment but were ignored by no10.

Normally US ambassador is a non political appointment. I can see why Starmer chose him, specifically with trump in mind. A: he was a Lord, trump likes being lorded, b:He can be very smarmy, Trump likes being smarmed. c:he is a snotty self opinionated mysogonist, just like trump. He was ideal.
It worked well till ironically Trump tried to bury Epstein stuff, which has come back to bite him, and they are both poisened by him.

Are you sure he wasn't chosen because he is a buddy of Morgan McSweeney?

It's reported that until McSweeney came on the scene the front runners were David Miliband or George Osborne with Mandy a distant third.
