Not sure why the over seventies are the sole focus. Plenty of younger people develop sight problems which degrade vision over time.

I get that entirely. Another four and bit years and I'll be 70.
Both my kids have keratoconus. Son's was treated Daughter's just monitored. She's now got contacts made to measure to deal with it and, since experiencing the improvement they bring, is concerned about her vision in the specs she used before.

Radio Hampshire reported that it's something to do with a convoy of VIPs being held up by some pensioner dawdling along in the outside lane of the M25 oblivious to all the flashing blue lights in his rearview.

Apparently they've proposed that the test should be the ability to spot a bus from 20 yards...

Likewise. I had my cataracts done a few years back on the NHS and I can now see a pin in the gutter from a thousand yards away.

There appears to be no reasonable objection to this. Ideally every driver should have an eyesight test at regular intervals through their driving career but checking the over seventies is a good start.

I agree, and if I was advised my sight was no longer up to scratch I'd have no qualms about immediately handing in my licence. I don't want to be responsible for killing someone.

On this note, at my 93 year old dad’s optician appt last week he was told his eyesight was now on the borderline and optician recommended he hang up his car keys.
Surprisingly, my dad seemed to take this news well, I have now to arrange selling his car. In his own words, he has driven for over 70 years and has no accidents and injured no one. So a good time to quit while he is ahead. He still has thoughts on getting a mobility scooter though. However a few days later, someone on a scooter was hit and killed in his town. He hasn’t mentioned it since.
His car is a 1.6 auto Nissan Note which I think is probably the choice of half the oldies still on the road!
