In middle of August we are taking MIL down to visit her ailing brother in Welshpool. Friday to Monday. She will stay with them but we need to find our own digs.
I am not particularly wanting to hang about theirs all weekend so using the usual websites to try and find accommodation but could realistically go in any direction, probably up to an hour away from Welshpool.
Wife and I like to sightsee, scenic walks (not mountains) etc, not into shopping, - any pointers as to what to do and what area to aim for?
Of course it’s still school holidays so accommodation is expensive but hoping to get something less than about £500 but that will vary depending on where we end up.
Will probably leave booking something to the last minute in the hope that prices come down, but also if good weather is forecast then might think about just bringing the tent and camping somewhere.
Cheers

I've always liked Clun and the are round about.
Good for walking (hilly but not mountainous). Quite rural and quiet, and in an AONB (Shropshire Hills).
Decent pubs in Clun itself (or at least they were).

Neighbours moved to Clun some years back and we visited a while back. Seemed a nice enough area and we stayed at the central village pub - the White Horse - which was comfortable enough - I think you have to call to book though.
