Has anyone any experience of this part of the world ? Early September I return to Santander, initially a week in the NW Picos then explore the north coast of Spain using campsites before entering Portugal.
Porto has been recommended so I hope to spend a few days there before heading back east, via Salamanca, for the start of our C Blanca mountain walking season in October ( programme always begins the first Wednesday in October).
Places to visit, both on the coast and inland, not wanting to travel
South of Porto, that can wait until another time. Thanks.

No direct experience but watched a Michael Portaloo programme on northern Portugal (BBC I think) recently and decided maybe I'd try it sometime. Maybe assist you too.

Been to Porto. Very interesting city. Got the train there from Lisbon. Amazingly cheap. Porto is a bit rougher round the edges than Lisbon but I really liked it .

I think I mentioned that we are 'doing' the Picos de Europa and the Douro valley in Sept but you'll probably be there before us. We're also going on the 30 hour ferry.
Hard to believe but apart from two business trips to Madrid and a week in Fuerteventura I have never been to Spain so it will be a new country to get lost in.

Manatee…I enjoy the two nighter outbound ferry from
Portsmouth.
All day to drive south, leisurely full day at sea, then away by 09:00 to wherever takes your fancy from Bilbao or Santander.
I’ve tried other options ( Newhaven > Dieppe with OAPs discounted fare) but by far prefer the BF longer sailing.
Costs me a small fortune travelling solo, with a 4 berth cabin, but economies can be made elsewhere.
