Watched BBC news and I saw the sum

We’re all different but in his position I’d have had a quiet do and employed a few folks to anonymously trickle money into small volunteer led charities.

I recall Debbie McGee being asked during an interview, "why did you marry the millionaire Paul Daniels"?

My initial reaction is abhorrence of the waste associated with such an event when there is so much more and better that could be done for humanity.
It is his money - he can do as he wishes. Perhaps an oversize ego wanting recognition realising the only assured way to get it is to do the extravagantly unnecessary. Some will be impressed, valuing brand and money over rational quality and integrity.
Bezos is apparently worth ~£200bn. £40m is no more than small change.
Put into a more normal context - it is equivalent to Mr Average worth (say) £200k spending £40 on a wedding - a bowl of peanuts to be shared amongst all the guests + a celebratory small glass of cheap sweet sherry.
One may eve describe Bezos as cheapskate.

Ah yes I read that it was imminent a week or so back. My recollection is that he wanted to take over pretty much all of Venice for it but his ambitions were thwarted by protestors and only got a sizeable chunk of it.

I suppose you could claim that at least whatever businesses he employed shared a windfall of forty million between them.
