Bit of a proud dad moment - zippy
The lad has just got his degree after several years of being very ill.

First Class Honours in Mathematics.

Over the moon really. It's not been easy.

Congratulations. Nothing better than those 'proud Dad' moments! :)

A real degree, not some useless made-up junk.

You mean things like history and philosophy are easy? :-P

A 1st in Maths is a premier qualification.
Best of luck in his future career.

I have grandson off to University to do Maths, at the same university as his dad who gained a 1st in Engineering 27 years ago.

A tough task taking on Pure Maths - he was warned by me but insisted that was he wanted to do.

Oh no. History and Philosophy have practical engineering components now don't they? Stuff like paint spraying and monument levelling?

;-)

Actually there is a considerable overlap between elements of pure mathematics and philosophy.

This young man was on University Challenge..... Studying Ancient Greek Crowd Psychology.

That should open many career options !

Both my kids, now both over 30, have degrees in history plus another subject.

If you can study to, and write at, the level for a degree then you've a skill that's demonstrable whatever the specific occupation.

That does seem a little niche. Sure there’s not an “and” in there?

Totally misses the point by treating degrees solely as vocational qualifications.

They're not and never were.

Until tuition loans were required to be taken out and paid back that was.........

And rightly so. A springboard to a great and rewarding career.

Good that is.
I failed my Maths ‘O’ level twice & sitting the paper a third time was a waste of everyone’s time.
I can still add up several items in my local Morrisons so all is not lost.
And know when a service charge has been added on the rare occasions I eat out :-)

Pleased for you and the lad Zippy, a justly proud achievement.

I idled my way through school and left at fifteen with nothing. Good training as I've since idled my way through life.

I own my house and I ain't skint, so I can't complain.

My daughters studied maths and further maths, the other English and classic civilisations.

The first did nothing relevant to her degree and is now a stay at home mother looking after her child and husband.
The other, had a series of jobs in media, personnel, charities and is now one step away from being the CEO of a company.

I was denied the chance of uni by the death of one parent and the death of the other when I was sixteen, just after I left school. ONC in electrical and mechanical engineering, before I was forced down the C&G path. Obtained a full tech certificate, which I think may have intimidated lesser qualified managers. Was a manager for fifteen months and voluntarily reverted to a more engineering role, where I was better able to put my skills.

Thanks for all of your kind comments.

The lad doesn't quite know what he wants to do career wise.

He's currently set on designing a piece of software based on his dissertation and has sheets of A3 paper with formulae, interface designs, flow-charts etc on the dining room table.

He's also thinking about taking a masters in a couple of years, in a subject that isn't maths based, but where his maths will be useful and he has been interested in bio-chemistry more recently.

I guess the important thing is that he's fulfilled.

A lazy morning today after the lad's graduation ceremony yesterday at Canterbury Cathedral - we got home in the early hours this morning.

This was the second graduation ceremony that I have attended (Miss Z some years ago now).

Both were great, though this one was special, there was a reception with buffet to start and a real celebratory atmosphere. Then we moved on to the cathedral. It is a great location and added to the sense of occasion to the day, especially with the addition of a live orchestra.

It was a joyous occasion. Formal, of course, but the university's chancellor was up for celebrating with the graduates, including taking selfies and more than a cursory congratulation to the graduates - it did make for a long ceremony, but well worth it.
