Contactless Payments Not Showing Amounts - zippy
Out and about this weekend and spending a bit of money in restaurants, cafes, markets etc, I noticed an annoying trend of being presented with the credit card machine with the amount facing the server which is annoying because I like to see what I am paying.

They then make you feel guilty for not trusting that they've put in the correct value.

Some machines are only boxes without a display and the amount is on the vendors phone. What's to stop them having one phone with the amount they show you and another phone with the true (higher) amount?

Ask for a till receipt?

In the restaurants, they provided the bill but you couldn't see the amount on the screen without asking.

The cafe provided a receipt but again, the server held the screen towards them.

Receipts from the market were non-existent.

That is a bit naughty, esp in restaurants where they may have already added a discretionary service charge.

In New Orleans bars you had to hand over your phone/card to them to wave it at their device which was fixed to the side of the till. Seemed universal. You also got a slip of paper to sign once it had been waved. In many bars the slip had the total, then a calculations showing you the amount of tip at 7, 15 and 20% (or similar) for you to choose which to add and a space to write it in with the new total under. Which felt too late to me as the card had already been read - but my daughter made sure she filled in the whole slip so they couldn't amend it with a tip you didn't want to give. All a bit odd.

Just turn the card reader round so you can read it.
Simple really.
If you pay with your phone you can see details in your wallet. If you have mobile banking the amount will appear on your account almost instantly.

Every time I try that I find I get glared at - as if I don't trust them - I do, but errors can be made which are hard to put right after the event.

Once purchased something for say £35, but was put through as £3500, missing out the decimal. Of course the machine asked for the card and pin so it was spotted and corrected.

Perhaps you need to be a little more assertive?

Pay by phone, the amount pops up on the screen once you've clicked or the phone has scanned your boat race.

Same with Virgin Money. In fact at ATMs (remember those?) the alert pings up a moment before the cash is presented.
