Council tax appeal - martin aston
I’ve always been irked that our Council Tax is Band G, the second highest band. It’s a nice enough 1989 detached 1400 sq ft house but way short of the many Band H top band properties in the area. That in itself is not grounds for appeal.

Immediate neighbouring houses are in lower bands than ours but are about 150 sq ft smaller. Shouldn’t we be in the same band? However I was always wary of appealing in case they rejected mine and jacked the neighbours’ rate up.

There are a few identical house to ours a few doors away.
Naively I always assumed that they were also in the same band as ours. After all, the original valuations were done at the same time by driving by all the houses in the estate.

Last year however one of these identical houses came up for sale and the council tax band was shown as F, one below ours. A quick online check showed that others were F too.

I put in an appeal last autumn and the result came in today.

How much is being refunded?

Just over £9k.

Good for you.

My old house had lower water rates than my identical neighbour, because I pointed out my sewerage charges were inadmissible as the sewers were the responsibility of the council, not the water co. The water company maintained them on behalf of the council.
My neighbour appealed and mine were increased!

Not sure I follow that. Round here clean and waste are both billed by Anglian. We're metered but I don't think it's different in places where there's a Rateable Value option.

In some parts of Anglian's area the supply is with Affinity or Essex and Suffolk and on the peripheries of their area there are oddities with Severn Trent, Thames or Yorkshire.

I think a fair chunk of the Thames Valley has water from Southern (or maybe South Eastern) and waste by Thames. I know I do.

Why didn't you give me a heads-up? I'd have told her that I'm the boss and I'm going round to the Fair!
