I wonder what happened there? -

my guess
Looks like a TPAC was in progress and things did not go to plan.

IMO Poor reporting.

" one with its roof ripped off "
It would appear the car furthest up the road has had its roof and doors cut off for medical access.

I think I'm suffering from some sort of bias but I'd like to see a bit of statistical work on situations where black BMW's and Audi's are common factors.

>>Roof cut off...

Usually serious injuries for that to happen.

Hope they make a full and speedy recovery.

>> Usually serious injuries for that to happen.

There have also been stories of an excess of caution around nature/effect of injuries leading to cars being given the sardine can treatment when it might not have been necessary.

Yes. We went through a phase of trying not to put injured parties in PVs as Ambulance would have neck braces on and Trumpton the roof of in the bat of an eye lid.
I'm sure they saw it as a challenge or revenge for constantly suggesting they slept all night and ate too many spaghetti hoops :)

I suspect that if a car is likely to be a write off anyway (and the threshold seems to be very low these days) then they don't spend too long fretting about whether to cut the roof off.

An interesting update

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cewgj1p79j4o

I am guessing the unmarked car that ended up in the central reservation basically hit all these vehicles at speed whilst they were near stationary.

Still don’t know how the one further in front got in that state though!

I think you are right about the plain car crashing into the rear of 'the box.' I'm sure at some stage we will be enlightened as to why. I'm seeing that the at the site there is an off slip.
Whether the fact that the box was attempting to prevent the target car leaving at that location, again we can only surmise. Best practice, dependent on circumstances and resources is to keep the pursuit on the main carriageway particularly duals and motorways as oncoming traffic is protected by central barriers and there are less exits. Keep the potential danger out of heavily built up areas.
Ive been trying to work out the type of car right at the front that's had its roof taken off by Trumpton presumably through potential neck or spine injuries.
Ive been looking at a long distance shot from the rear of the scene which tend to show surface abrasion better:
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14591257/police-chase-crash-bmw-speed-away-newcastle.html
There appears to be a wide mark on the surface from the car with its roof off to the back of the plain black car on its side. Hmmm?
 Bent Z Cars - Fullchat
Timed out as I was editing:
I was adding that the type of car with its roof peeled back is relevant. If it was Roads Policing then it could be involved in the pursuit. If not then it could be used as a feeder car to psychologically keep the suspect car on the dual carriageway.
Alongside the wide mark there appear to be tyre marks. Its as f the car up against the barrier has actually come from the opposite direction on its side for a while. Maybe hit the concrete at the side?? Masses of debris to the front of 'the box'. Little to the rear. All very confusing.
The long distance shot is near the bottom of the article

I think the front car is a Superb estate?

Could that wide mark be all the fluids that have exited the black car and simply followed the road camber to the side?
 Bent Z Cars - Biggles
To me it looks like they were blocking the main carriageway (with a stinger on the exit?) but the villain has tried to squeeze past and shunted the one car forwards, leaving a diesel slick as it went.

I'm intrigued by the contribution of the unmarked Volvo.

Nice quote from the prosecutor regarding his continuing to drive while disqualified in the days following the accident -

Simon Worthy, prosecuting, said: "One would have thought as a matter of common sense... that you would have been a bit more sensible about your activities, having been so lucky to get out of an accident only two days before.

"But no, no, you continue to stick two fingers up."

>> I'm intrigued by the contribution of the unmarked Volvo.

Is that the vehicle on its side against the crash barrier?

I assume so, the black car on its wheels is the peccant BMW.

"Helicopter footage showed his [the perp's] vehicle was "essentially at a stop" when an unmarked police Volvo, which had earlier reached speeds of 135mph, hit them at about 80mph."

From the marks it seems feasible that the Volvo was stopped by the back of the marked car with no roof, which has been punted further down the road in a demonstration of transfer of momentum, Newton's Balls style

Manatee think that actually is the most logical conclusion. The black BMW they are chasing looks relatively undamaged.
Could almost have been a textbook stop if it wasn’t for the unmarked and their actions. Wonder if it was an ARV.

Does bring to the forefront again the strategy of road policing v normal policing. Police typically won’t turn up to shoplifting in stores but they ultimately here have probably written off £200k of cars in chasing someone who they didn’t know what his crime was. Yeah I get that until they stop them then they don’t know why they fail to stop.
And yeah I get if they don’t chase then that itself is a statement

But they are already making a statement by failing to respond to lots of “low level” crime due to allocation of resources.

Don’t know what the answer is.

...if so, it's hardly "unmarked"... ;-)
