Has the Highway Code changed - wotspur

I was travelling along LEA bridge Rs , and turned right into Argyll road ,and have just been issued with a ticket for entering a yellow box junction . Does anyone have any local knowledge as to why this has been issued and likelihood of fighting it successfully

To save us endless Googling could you link us to a postcode or a Streetview of the location?

E10 , it’s from Waltham Forest .
Sadly because it’s a hire vehicle ,the invoice was sent to the company , and paid before even notifying me , so I doubt they’ll reverse the decision but I want to understand why entering a yellow box to turn right is now illegal

Is the road you were turning into Argall Way:

You can enter the box to turn right while you're prevented from turning by oncoming traffic.

If you cannot enter the road you're turning into becuase it's full of traffic then, IIRC, the offence is made out.

A assume the evidence is from a camera. Have you seen the pictures.

Wot he said. You can only enter if your exit is clear.

Trouble with that is that sometimes you need to be in the box to see if the exit is clear or it's clear when you enter the box but then space is taken by vehicles that have turned from the opposite direction.

I was turning right and was the first vehicle at the lights yes the road to the right was busy when I set off, but if no traffic was coming across , I could have turned and entered the road ok , but when those coming in the opposite direction stopped and I was able to turn right without stopping anyone going straight across from any problems, so don’t understand what happened .
The most annoying yellow box is outside West Middlesex hospital on Twickenham Road it covers the width of 3 + road widths . A few years back I waited and waited for a space , only to find once I’d set off , a long vehicle turned left out of the hospital leaving me stranded . The woman I spoke to about the video agreed , I had moved when there was space , but I didn’t anticipate a vehicle travelling at speed would just pull out blocking my exit . Last week same scenario and someone pulled out of the hospital to turn right blocking off my exit , thankfully I was able to turn left into the hospital and hopefully avoid another ticket

What happens if you enter the box when the exit is clear but oncoming traffic turns left, blockjng your exit?

You're potentially screwed if it's camera enforcement.

Maybe good grounds to appeal though

That’s what happened to me outside West Middlesex hospital and no they didn’t let me off , hence the second time , when I left it was fine ,till a car pulled out to turn right m so I had to drive into the hospital car park , it’s ridiculous judgement

From the New highway code:

You may enter a box junction and wait when turning right if you are prevented from doing so by oncoming traffic or other vehicles waiting to turn right, but only if your exit road or lane is clear

As brompt suggested, you're only allowed to enter the box if your exit is clear. Not that it helps, but I would have been caught out as well.

Many years ago, there was a fatal moped accident near here. The young rider was killed.

He hit a parked car that was parked around the blind side of a very sharp bend.

His mother claimed that the owner of the parked car was at fault for not parking safely.

The coroner, (known to Mrs Z and real old school gent), concluded that if the lad couldn't be sure what was around the corner, then he should have stopped his moped, and walked around to check it was clear.

I guess the same logic could be applied to a yellow box junction if you can't see the exit road is clear - get out and look - reality is different of course and by the time you've got back in to your car, the situation may have changed significantly.

I got caught at this junction in Brixton: maps.app.goo.gl/ppy8R6M4mRUtb65Y9

There's two lanes into the box junction, but the LH lane becomes a bus lane the other side. I was in the RH lane and when the lights turned green, a couple of cars shot forward from the LH lane and into the RH lane the other side of the box. I'd started moving, but had the choice of being stranded in the box, or enter the bus lane.

When ever I enter a yellow box ,whether or not I’m running right I signal just in case, my lane is clear , until someone in the left hand lane moves into my lane ,to prevent themselves getting caught out .
