So having got the Fabia sold this morning we thought we start the search for a 'lingo replacement with a Skoda Superb estate, 2.0/150PS diesel, on sale at another branch of the local dealership. Didn't set out intending to buy. The Superb ticked all the boxes once we accepted there was nothing van derived like a VW Caddy or it's Ford cousin that fitted the bill including towing weights. Intention though was to have a look at a few other contenders like a Kuga or possibly something from the Kia/Hyundai stable. The Skoda was taken for a test drive and just felt like home. 'Flight Deck' pretty similar to the Fabia. Performance more than adequate, Mrs B approved, and the sticker price was good for year/mileage. Talked through the idea of reserving it for 48 hours while we did 'due diligence' with other models but I think the dealership could feel the end of the month breathing down their neck. Got a finance deal with 2 years extra warranty - 4 in total - bundled plus a 2yr service plan and breakdown recovery. Added most of the cost a the spare wheel we needed as a discount and gave us a tank of fuel. Pick up on Thursday. Reply to this message | Report message

Always had an eye on the Superb Estate, good dog carrier with its voluminous boot, VRS version has tickled my boat a few times. was a bit turned off by DSG reliability worries, and not keen on its characteristics. Reliability wise I think the box is ok now. Reply to this message | Report message

I prefer manual to auto and manual diesels are not that common. In fact I think the current version is auto only unless manual is a factory option. The one we've gone for is 2022 so the previous model. Found two within 40 miles, both at same dealer. As it fitted the bill and the deal was good we said sod it. Enjoy Bromp! I guess having the Fabia may have pre-conditioned you somewhat to the Superb - as your comment re the cockpit suggests and it being familiar made it comfortable? My ex boss has had two. He's a very high mileage driver and was hit with new suspension costs - I don't know the details, but the car was ex-demo and about 2 years in to a 3 year PCP deal. He did did get another one - so he must like them! They do look smart - but to me, just a little too long - that's not a criticism of the car - just me - I'm dreadful at parking! Having usual wish we'd done/thought of stuff like depth of boot v upright folded Brompton but pretty sure it's an illusion 'cos boot is massive lengthways. Skoda tow bar is c£2k fitted. Looking at fitted prices from Witter etc agents that can get stuffed. Certainly got capacity to tow current 'van or any likely replacement AND a full set of passengers which was the 'lingo's trap. Have you checked whether you can lower the boot “intermediate” floor to give extra depth? Some VAG cars have quite substantial gubbins that look fixed but actually unclick to allow a lower position. I remember helping my son to move a sofa in his Passat estate and we gained an extra few inches. Not sure about the Superb but it’s worth checking. Apologies if I am teaching you how to suck eggs! Well done, great choice, Brompt (apart from the manual diesel bit...) There are a few on the street and a couple in the family and I think they're fantastic, especially the estate. The boot of the Superb makes a transit feel cramped. I wouldn't mind a Laurin & Klement 4x4 estate... Reply to this message | Report message

Hope you enjoy loads of good miles in it Bromp. I'd thought I would stick with an auto these days as I did loads of miles previously and a manual hurt my left leg on long journeys, but now that has changed, I could easily use one for shorter trips. Do you drop the bikes in the boot or do you have one of those fancy carrier boxes for them? Just conscious that the latter may add a couple of inches of height. Brommies go in the boot folded but upright. Held in place by ratchet straps so they can't fall over. It won't do the Berlingo's party trick where you can remove the o/s rear passenger seat and take two or three conventional bikes stowed fore/aft stacked in the 'English fashion'. Will need either a roof rack or a tow bar fitment for that. Reply to this message | Report message

Both parents had autos in later life and they always struck me as being too much like dodgem cars. Manual diesel Superb estates are thin on the ground though. That said, I had a manual Fiat 500 last time I was on the Canaries and I was getting in a tangle with which of its six forward gears it was in. Asked for a manual for my next holiday (Madeira). One option was a Seat Leon estate which should follow the VAG protocol and have an indicator on the dash. If I'm still bothered I might take a punt on an auto. The maitre d looked him up and down slowly, and said "Oh No sir, we don't have a table for "you" As far as DSG boxes go, I think the reliability issues are resolved, as much by admitting they need a service (fluid and filters) (originally touted as sealed for life), but me, I dont like the way they feel after trying to leap out into a busy roundabout in Spain, and the damn thing dithering about what gears it would use at the vital moment. Off the line with 500 horsepower behind a V8 they are lightning fast, with 1.4 litres in busy traffic they are a PITA. I think you did well to swerve the DSG, particularly on a used car. Because they 'automatic', some people will insist on holding the car on the accelerator/creep. This is death to the DSG. My daughter's 3.0 diesel Audi has the 7 speed wet clutch one. It's just started to slip at 78,000. Minimum cost to fix, if it's just the clutch, will be £2,700. My old man has a 2014 Octavia auto and it's clunky at traffic speeds. Awful in reverse. Very juddery. It has about 80,000 miles on it if I remember correctly. And I cannot believe it came without cruise although I know he'd never use it if it did. He doesn't use the aircon either but it's not surprising, he keeps the central heating on all summer. Having driven it a bit more and sat on the drive looking at multiple settings it's going to take time to get everything understood and as I'd like it. Right now I'm a bit like pilots were when the Airbus A320 came along; what's it doing now!! It's also the first car I've had with an electric parking brake. TBH I think I just need to forget it and let it do its stuff while just being aware of any potential to roll back or forwards. It certainly needed no intervention from me when I needed to wait on an upslope while another car came down through a pinch point created by parked cars. Off to Center Parcs with the rest of the family next weekend. Broadly same as mine as the current generation is 2024 on and previous was 2016-24. Does yours have conventional instruments? Mine has a 'virtual' LED dash which seems to have a mind of its own as how it shows stuff. I also find the nag facility about what gear I should be in irritating. Bromp you mention the parking brake. If it’s the same as my Golf you will soon adapt. As you say it’s quite happy to be left to do its thing. I set mine to automatic the first day I got it 6 years ago and I’ve never had occasion to use it manually. It does require a definite braking action on the brake pedal so it will not auto-engage if you are coasting to a stop or balancing the car on a slope with the accelerator and clutch. You soon get used to giving a dab on the foot brake if you need the handbrake to apply. I do get caught out after a service as my indie always leaves it in manual. The first time this happened it gave me a split second of “wtf” when I stoped at a junction and I felt the car move back a few inches. The other Golf braking oddity which you may or may not find on the Superb is an aggressive emergency auto brake when reversing. If you reverse more than a few feet, without having touched the foot brake during the manoeuvre, the parking sensor triggers an emergency stop. It’s so hard and loud you think you’ve hit something. I'm very happy with my Superb PHEV, but... I thought about another lightly used later one, but then discovered there is now no battery degradation warranty on any VW group phevs for anything other than the first owner. So even a pre-reg (Audi, Skoda, VW, Seat) phev has no degradation warranty. So no PHEV from any of them for me, unless it's brand new, which is out of my reach. My existing 2020 model has no such exclusion, so has the 8 years warranty as full EVs do, luckily for me Reply to this message | Report message

I had a 2016 Golf GTD (manual gearbox) with the automatic handbrake a few years back. Got on well with it, including the handbrake. As others have said, a firm prod of the brake activated the auto hold and again, this worked well. In very tight parking situations, I found it beneficial to switch off the auto hold temporarily. Turned the auto-hold off on my GTI - I didn't like the noise the pads made when they eventually released, seemed to be too much hold - mechanically it just didn't sound right. With the DSG as soon as you come off the brake onto the gas the car moves forward even on the steepest of hills without any rollback. Just don't have a problem with your EPB as they are on a massive backorder all through the VW group as the factory was an unfortunate casualty of the Ukraine war so production has had to be relocated causing part delays. Auto Hold and parking brake is ok. Auto Hold is operated either automatically or with a prod on the pedal. Parking brake is not quite as good as my old V60, which was brilliant. The XC40's not so. The Audi is the same. The Auto Hold on my wife's 128Ti is not quite as good as the Audi's. Guess that all VAG cars work much the same. Reply to this message | Report message
