Our dog is a 5 year old lab. Have always known that our house has that “dog smell”. My in laws who look after ours and my BILs dog also have it. We are not talking wet dog smell. Just smell.

Kinda always thought it is what it is, comes with the territory etc, but we now have a new granddaughter and when we returned her to my daughter last week she commented on how she could smell “our house” from the baby’s clothes. She didn’t mean it in a bad way but has made us much more conscious of it.

Yeah can spray air fresheners or use candles etc but anyone got any good advice for masking smells / absorbing odours type of thing?

Tips from Mr Google

Is the dog properly house trained? I know several folk who claim their dogs are, but the dogs still feel it's acceptable to crap and pee indoors.

Carpets are the thing I think.

The first shared house I lived in had a previous tenant who had a massive Lab/Retriever type dog. They were breaching the tenancy conditions by having it there but the landlord's agents were either unaware or turned a blind eye. The dog smell was evident as soon as you opened the door.

Thorough shampooing of carpets and treatment with 'shake n vac' type stuff reduced it massively but as soon as summer came and sunlight warmed the carpets it was back.

Parents last house was similar but mostly they had new carpets or brought them over from the old place and had them cut and fitted. The culprit was fact that the kitchen had carpet tiles. They were removed and replaced with vinyl.

We are laminate flooring throughout other than a rug that gets hoovered every day and shake n vac regularly applied.
But has never actually been shampooed.

I wonder about the air purifier suggestion, must do some research.

As a non-dog person I think all houses with dogs which I've visited smell. Not sure you can do much about it except get shot of the dog!

Yes you can always detect a dog owner’s house or car by the smell. Same as smokers. I guess if you live with it you don’t notice it.

One of our last two Border Terriers, Harry, had an allergy to just about everything. The house absolutely stank. We used all the usual things, including Joss sticks but nothing removed it. He spent a lot of time scratching. In the end. took him on his final walk round to the vets and held him as he was pts. The day after, the smell was no more.

I hurried home and, not ashamed to say, cried my heart out. Our latest, Millie, seems not to smell at all buy probably dogless visitors may say different.

Even the best trained dogs have occasional off days. They are a little like a partially toilet trained little humans (say 3 years old) (or possibly very old) wandering the house without a nappy.

"Mistakes" happen. Personally I would no more have dogs in the house than live next to an open sewer. Smell is part of dog owning territory - dogs = smelly house.

No they don't if they're propely trained. I've had several dogs and even in their dotage they didn't disgrace. They did have pet flaps and a secure garden.

Just like us, if they've eaten something that's disagreed and they can't get out quick enough they'll soil themselves. Son's dog did that a couple of weeks ago.

But that's different issue from a Labrador smell when you walk in.

Son's routine - baths the dog every 2 weeks.
Added to that is the occasional "extra wash" after being out & about.

Yes, the dog, 3.5 years old has a doggy smell but not offensive.
You can tell when she has just been washed.

The dog loves a bath which makes life a lot easier.

I have had dogs in the past that took 2 people to wash the dog - one so bad it was a "tin bath" in the garden.

They do, all humans smell of human, dog smell is different which is why non dog people pick up on it - always will but it need not be overpowering or a problem.

At the end of the day, smell is mostly contained in fabrics and materials that dogs touch (and the dog hair hiding under your sofa). Dogs lie around a lot, on carpets, bedding etc. So you wash their bedding regularly, sprinkle carpets/rugs with neutradol and vacuum. Never allow dogs on furniture. It should be easily manageable.

The best smell in the world? a 6 week old puppy. The worse? Blue Grass perfume, much favoured (in huge quantities) by elderly ladies.

There must be a knock-off, smell-a-like or the customer base stocked up and its been inherited in grannies will, as I frequently get assailed on walks. Its sneaky stuff, trails behind the offender by about 5 - 10 yards.

But it's not to the dog owning masses. I'm expecting visitors and told them either to not bring their dog, or come with a cage, dog bed or blanket. I suspect they won't and i'll end up shouting:"get that e***** dog off my new furniture"!
