I'd be up for it if I didn't already have one, albeit pre-facelift :-)
Nearly 3 years old mind, no problems with it so far
|
I actually prefer the look of the pre-face lift model but many car journalists think the facelift model looks better.
|
While the offer ended at the end of Sept, I had a dealer contact me offering the Red Trophy which is similar to what I already have, for a decent price. So the deal was done this afternoon. Collect it sometime after return from Portugal in mid Nov.
Anyone want a cheap 2nd hand MG5 long range Exclusive in red? The trade in price isn't great. The depreciation would have been huge had I not got a really good NHS discount in the first place.
|
Advert is gone Bobby. But yes, probably :-)
Like this - long range version. I'm testing the water elsewhere at £11700 which is pretty cheap

How do you scrape the back with reversing sensors and presumably a camera as well???
|
Carelessness!! :-)
Funny thing is, I've done it twice in the same place. Paid for the first to be repaired then did it again.
The first time I brushed a telegraph pole when reversing down a cycle lane ( - I was conscious I might be fined!) while looking for a house number.
The second time I went forwards into a parking bay in an unfamiliar main but very narrow and bendy village street then immediately - well pretty much immediately - decided to pull back out and park it round the corner, so swung back on the same steering lock as I'd just gone in on. In the few seconds (literally) I'd been stationery a Fiesta had come in and parked on the other side of the road, and the owner had disappeared. I don't know if again it didn't trigger the beeps or I ignored them, and I was on full lock so maybe the camera didn't pick it up. I was rushing as I was concerned in case something came belting round the corner with me across the road. No excuses really though. I did laugh. It's a long story after that which I shan't bore you with but that's how.
|
So having a signed contract form a week ago for a red MG5 Trophy my dealer has contacted me and said they just checked and they can't get red after all.
I presume I can back out and get my deposit back but are there any other options if I go for a colour they can supply? (I really wanted red!)
I suppose a goodwill gesture of free mats or something but anything else?
|
From experience only...
Mrs Z purchased a run out model MK1 Zafira. She said any colour except for "battleship grey". Guess what colour was delivered. There was no offer of goodwill gestures or similar and it was a case of take it or leave it. She walked. Deposit refunded.
Make sure it's a colour you like - because you'll need to live with it - of course you won't see the colour whilst driving it :-D.
I wouldn't want to be paying the extra for metalic paint if it wasn't a colour I wanted, but otherwise if it's a nice colour go with it. Plus ask for mats, free service etc.
|
The tri-coat red I wanted is the only premium paint. I'd settle for the grey but at the moment the dealer hasn't responded to yesterday's email. This is no doubt going to be all complicated by me not being there to collect it, and them not wanting to hold it in stock for me.
I previously asked for mats etc but no chance. I doubt that will change.
|
>> I suppose a goodwill gesture of free mats or something but anything else?
Red? maybe a royal mail transfer on the doors? Black and white cat hanging in the rear window?
|
Friend of ours with a red Berlingo had a Jess toy on her parcel shelf.
|
Haha the red looks good but I've settled for the grey - still awaiting fresh paperwork though.
They've said there is no problem with supply of grey. These are all sitting in the docks at Bristol and I' a bit annoyed it took them a week to ask whether there were any red ones left.
There's one upgrade I'm surprised at them wanting to charge for- I believe it's a firmware upgrade only but it allows use of Tesla chargers, which is handy if I ever need public charging, as they are plentiful in places and quite a bit cheaper than ordinary ones. The dealers charge £150 up to retrofit to older cars but I'm in contact with MG as I understood the dealer should be doing it for free - but they want £50 for it.
|
>>The dealers charge £150 up to retrofit to older cars but I'm in contact with MG as I understood
>>the dealer should be doing it for free - but they want £50 for it.
I've read about this. The cars get good reviews, but the dealer network could spoil the reputation for the company by charging for something that really should be carried out as part of the pre-delivery checks / service etc.

Have you explored the cost of insurance for a EV? Some insurers have pulled out completely, others are running scared.
|
Have they really? Mine is quoting a similar renewal premium for my ID3 as an equivalent Golf.
|
The online wotsits quoted me a lower premium than my existing car, which is exactly the same car except it's not new, it's pre-facelift, three years older and less valuable (same provider, Tesco).
I'm not expecting the same when I call to adjust it though
|
Picked the new motor up today. Bargain.
The insurance turned out a bit annoying Tesco wanted £107 for the remainder of the year (till July).
I could get a much cheaper insurance on all of the comparison sites. But when I clicked through to finalise the quote each company said "here's your new price" which was over £150 more. I don't know why it was like that - in past experience the price on the comparison site is the price you pay, The only wrinkle was that the car couldn't be found by registration, only by typing on the car details (as it's only just been done). Can't see what difference that would make though as I declared that it was a new car and used it's proper value rather than the bargain price.

Nice - enjoy Smokie - though now you've gone electric does your moniker still fit!?

Of course. He'll be smokin' the tyres.
|
Enjoy the new car. We only see 5s for routine servicing. Happy to answer any queries if any features weren't explained at handover!
|
Thanks - but it's my 2nd - first was pre-facelift but there isn't a lot difference except cosmetically.
Routine service is always pretty cheap. I was quoted £150 for 2rd year + MOT juts before I sold the old one. No oil, no plugs, not much brake wear, not much to service really.
|
Did you have any problems selling your old mg5?
|
I used Motorway so no, not really. Value has dropped like a stone in 3 years but isn't that always the way? Got a slightly under 50% of what I paid, which was a discounted cost in the first place - would have been more painful if it hadn't been!
I'd intended keeping that car and there was nothing wrong with it - but for about a mere £11k I got 4 more years warranty + AA membership, a new set of tyres and an extra toy or two LOL
I would always consider Motorway when selling again. The initial expected price turned out to be somewhat ambitious but I knew it would be by comparing to Autotrader. I'd offered the car privately at £11700 here and on another forum with no interest, but on Autotrader I thonk it would have sold readily would at that price.
The dealer offered £11570, which is subject to change when they collect if it is not as stated, but they stuck by it. The money was in my bank before they took the car away. So easy.
|
Cheers, i just wondered what people were getting for them p/x in the real world, i don't know anyone with one. Stories online suggests p/x price for them are pretty low but you seem to get what you were wanting.
|
"Expecting" rather than "wanting" - but as I say 30 - 50% depreciation isn't so unusual in any car, is it? Mind you, compared to the full price (v. the reasonably chunky discounted price I paid) the deprecation was obvs more! Pretty sure I had something like 15% discount.

Another good deal:

That's useful, thanks. Seen them cheap but not quite that cheap. My daughter bought one last year but it was the short range and she'd like to trade up.
|
Have a look at Autotrader, there are some even cheaper:

Clearing the old models out before the new one arrives (based on the MG4, so should be a much better car)

>>Clearing the old models out before the new one arrives (based on the MG4, so should be a much better car)
Mk2 ZS EV is a very decent car.
At £20k it is the best new VFM car of ANY type right now.
|
A friend had an early one and it was very troublesome - he got rid of it.
|
Cars go wrong ;-)
Mine was flawless over 25k miles.
Couple of taxicabbers are at 200k+ miles.
|
Any idea what sort of problems?
|
I think the problems were mostly not charging when it should have, the car saying it was fully charged when it wasn't. Things like that, that meant the car couldn't be used for the planned work schedule.
|
That's a right pain.
Though there are always issues with cars. I bought a Ford Fiesta in 1991 and the engine hadn't been bolted in at the factory!
|
That seems quite good.
I'm expecting my daughter will have bought a new MG by the end of the day, she has a shopping list of them within striking distance. She already has an MG ZS but the short range and she wants the longer one. But it seems that all of the better spec ones (which she is after) have gone so she's poss going to buy a near-new one which are also very good prices.
If she's unsuccessful I might suggest she has a look at the Honda
|
As expected, daughter put the deposit on what is probably the last cheap MG ZS LR Trophy in the country earlier.
She really wanted a ZS with panoramic roof - which is the last model - she went to look at a year-old one which has been up for sale for 4 months at lunchtime, drove the hour to get home and called me about it. I'd have sooner she got a new one but she really really wanted that one. So she called them back to pay the deposit and in the meantime someone had walked in off the street and bought it!!
|

Not quite a car, but similar happened to me re a shed that was almost half price. Waited until SWMBO got home to discuss it and of course it had sold out by then! :-(

I have a Sportage with a Panoramic sunroof. The internal blind I have 2/3 closed more or less giving me a normal sized sunroof. To reduce direct sunlight (when we see it) into the cabin.
The other area of concern is if the roof should be subject to damage. A lot of searching and fine print reading eventually found me a policy the would provide cover minus the normal windscreen excess. Many policies want the normal policy excess on panoramic sunroofs.
So there is a bullet to be dodged.
|
>> Many policies want the normal policy excess on panoramic sunroofs.
You learn something new everyday!
|
>> Many policies want the normal policy excess on panoramic sunroofs.
We've had three cars, Berlingo, Roomster and Fabia with variations on glass roofs.
Just accepted that if it was damaged I'd be £3-400 out of pocket.
Never a scratch on any of them.
|
I’d stay clear of the Honda. Range not great and slow to charge.

Wow! 2.2m/kw when poor chinese brands are getting 3 to 4m/kw.
Thanks for the link Mr Moo!

When the eNy:1 was launched, all the road tests agreed that it was lousy to drive. Something to be aware of before you take the plunge and have to live with one every day.
|
I test drove one of these three years back. Wouldnt say it was lousy to drive just a bit uninspiring.
Not the sort of thing you would enjoy on a twisting country road. It also had this rather odd feature where the initial accelertion was suppressed which did away with on of the advantages of an EV.
|
>>just a bit uninspiring.
>>
Unfortunately, that's what many people want apparently.
>>It also had this rather odd feature where the initial accelertion was suppressed which did away >>with on of the advantages of an EV.
>>
I noticed the self charging hybrid Hyundai Tucson that I hired was like that. Very poor acceleration in electric mode. Apparently designed to maximise range not performance.
|
Acceleration required to make reasonable safe progress seems to be about half that needed to get the heart pumping and adrenalin rushing. Hyundai culture seems to favour staid not boy racer.
MG4 X power (EV) recently launched apparently has ~430bhp - supercar performance for relative peanuts. In days of old would need a big motor, high compression ratio, high revs, precision engineering, lots of dosh.
Today - maybe add an extra motor, tweak the digital bits, fancy wheels and callipers, job done.
|
Brand new MG4 X-Power out there for £25-26k.
From owner reports the acceleration is monumental, the handling a bit meh, and a fair number seems to have an issue with a vibration possibly coming from the rear drive.
Dumping the OEM Bridgestone Turanzas for something like Pilot Sport 5s is apparently a huge improvement.
|
>> From owner reports the acceleration is monumental
Having had an XPower demonstrator for 18 months (because no-one's buying them!) I can agree with that description. The intriguing thing is, if you don't plant the pedal all the way it drives just like a normal MG4 and feels like it would be fine for your nan as a runabout.
The weight does make itself felt when pushing on, though. It's as easy to hustle as a 300hp Discovery 5...
|
>>Wow! 2.2m/kw when poor chinese brands are getting 3 to 4m/kw.
AVG this winter for my Ioniq5 RWD has been 3.2 - commonly closer to 2 over the first 6 or 7 miles after a cold start as it takes energy to warm everything up.
And that's with a heat pump.
Once the distance ticks up the efficiency rises again.
Mixed driving will do about 230-240 miles in winter, 300+ in summer (354 miles WLTP)
|
When did the Mk2 come out?
What were the differences?
I see on auto trader they refer to Trophy and to Trophy Connect as 2 separate models?
|
The Connect is, I think, only in the older model and includes stuff like WiFi hotspot, live traffic and other useless stuff.
|
Mk2 came out summer 2022.
51 kWh LFP standard range 176bhp
73 kWh NMC long range 156bhp
(Almost same performance from each oddly enough)
Both packs could be has as SE (base) and Trophy flavours
SE was well specced (smart cruise, nav, 360cam, usual safety gubbins, carplay/AA, LED headlights.
Trophy added vinyl seats (pretty decent - better than the Mk1 that were prone to splitting on side bolsters), rear speakers, rear cross traffic alert and other minor bobs.
Between summer 22 and Jan 23 Trophy also had a pano opening roof, but it disappeared after that.
|
Daughter picks up her shiny new MG ZS Trophy LR tomorrow.
