Years ago when I used to go motor racing in the US I used to get a local SIM in Walmart I think, for about $70 a month maybe.

I'm off there again next spring, to New Orleans for a week or so. I'll do my own research but just wondered if anyone has a recent experience or suggestion of how to have data on the move? As WiFi is more abundant there maybe it isn't essential but it'd be nice to have, but it's an expensive bolt-on on my plan.

My recent trip to Canada revealed that it is one of the most expensive locations for data (including local purchase).

I covered the issue by buying a 30day SIM from Amazon which was unlimited for the USA, but 5GB roaming in Canada.

tinyurl.com/Simmyusa

It worked fine, but I did get a few (obvious) spam texts and calls as covered in the reviews.

There may be better USA only options, and if your 'phone will take an e-sim, there probably will be.

We used 3 PAYG in the USA a few years ago with roaming as at home or, then, in the EU.

AFAIK can still use that but whether it's available to new customers now I don't know.

Flexiroam. I used to pay a fortune for expensive roaming contracts and now I have a PAYG SIM and a Flexiroam eSIM. Other tried and tested ones include Nomad and Airalo.

Failing that a 3 Pay as you Go sim with a £10 top up will give you roaming in the USA as well as a form of VPN back to the UK.

Pick whichever one has the biggest discount going at the time. I have a referral link for Flexiroam which gets another 200mb of data if you go that way.

OK thanks!! :-) I think there is an additional charge now with 3 for US roaming but will recheck. The eSims sound a good plan - though I am musing whether I can get by there without mobile data - just depend on WiFi or do without. Won't be going away from civilisation as no car hire planned!!

Sorry - late to the thread...

A few years ago now (2016ish) I brought a 3 sim for Miss Z when she did her elective in New Zealand. It allowed roaming in so many countries including New Zealand and Australia where she holidayed for a while with some relatives before coming home.

Not the States, but the service was apparently flawless.

Just Google “travel SIM card USA”. Plenty of options

Thanks, I know how to Google, was after opinions as much as options... :-)

If you are on your own, it is relatively straight forward. Just look for the best deal.
If you are with family, it gets more complicated, as some deals restrict the use of a hotspot.
