I would have been more than a little cross had I been one of the victims of this particular error. Anyone who messed with my Betsy would be for it !

Drown them in a shallow ford.
Petrol pump goof up - Runfer D'Hills
...or throw them into the storage tank they had filled with the wrong fuel and shut the hatch having given them a box of Swan Vestas in case they are scared of the dark..

Wouldn't do it again would they eh ?
Petrol pump goof up - -
If it happened to either of our vehicles i'd want the entire fuel system replacing minimum, most vehicles driven till they stopped so major damage possible.

Does that happen in these circs or is it a quick drain and refill and on your way sonny, and don't bother us when your fuel system dies 2 years hence and the dealer wants a kings ransom to repair it.

"Either" GB ? Does this mean you have finally abandoned the Merc out in the tundra to die like an aged and no longer required squaw ?

Strewth and ninepence just when you thought it was safe to come out-:)

She's still languishing on the driveway, haven't had the heart to advertise her...i keep hoping i'll find some forgotten bundles of readies in a mattress so i can keep her.
Petrol pump goof up - Runfer D'Hills
I reckon that's what Lud did. He's always claiming poverty but he's been swanning about in France on a road trip for weeks. Must've been a thick old mattress...

There's a good number here not short of a few bob, meself not included, i wouldn't mind a tour of the Sussex estate though....wonder if he needs a butler?..i'd look after the place too whilst he's at the London pad..;)
Petrol pump goof up - Runfer D'Hills
If he starts calling you "Bennet" I reckon you're in with a shout. Get yourself a hat and you could waft him around in the Merc too. He'd smoke and swear in it though I fear !

Would you not smell the difference?

You can't really not get a whiff of what you're filling up with (even with BMW's very clever vapour reclaim system some gets out).
Petrol pump goof up - Iffy
...would you not smell the difference?...

I thought that, but many diesel pumps smell of diesel due to previous spillages.

There's often diesel on the ground around the pump which would further mask the smell of what was coming out of the nozzle.

There are thousands of mis-fuels every year which are the customers' fault.

Not all these people can be idiots, so it must be an easy mistake to make even when the right stuff is in the bulk tank.

Hmm
Petrol pump goof up - BiggerBadderDave
There are very few moments in the day when I'm not fantasising about neighbours' wives, yummy mummies and cowboys, but the moment I select a pump trigger is one of them.

Humph,

Let he who is without sin....

A few months ago I spoke to one of the AA men who only do misfuels.

He confirmed most of his customers appeared to be otherwise sane and sensible folk.

Petrol pump goof up - Runfer D'Hills
I'm more than prepared to lob a rock at this one. I can't imagine any circumstances in which I'd set out to fill my car with £50's worth or more of fuel it didn't need. Price of the stuff should be enough concentrate anyone's mind !

Like I've said before. you wouldn't put orange juice on your cornflakes would you ?

>>Like I've said before. you wouldn't put orange juice on your cornflakes would you ?

I know a couple of people who do that.
Petrol pump goof up - Runfer D'Hills
Look I'm not claiming perfection, far from it, but to somehow imply that misfueling is anything other than idiotic and that the "victims" are blameless is equally fatuous. Sure plenty of otherwise "normal" people have done it but they have no one to blame but themselves. They only have to read what it says on the pump. It's not hard.
Petrol pump goof up - -

Quite Hump.

I'm not going to say that i'll never do it, but should this disaster ever happen i'll be kicking meself all round the block and yes i'll be the biggest idiot limping and i shall take full responsibility for being that idiot.

Anyone with an ounce of mechanical interest will surely know by now that there's a likely result of extremely expensive damage possible that may not manifest itself for a long time.

It annoy's me when people claim on their insurance for misfuelling, and more fool the insurance companies for paying out, it's negligence not an accident.
Petrol pump goof up - Skoda
Personal responsibility? It'll never fly! ;-)

There has to be a rule or system or agency responsible for any possible mistake. There has to be a clearly defined responsibility chain to absolve the idiot of their consequences.

Unlawfully entered a house but broke your ankle on an unsafe kitchen floor? Clearly the home owner should be sued, how dare they renovate on the night you intended to burgle!

I can see it now... No win no fee! Misfuelled? Were the signs clear enough to legal standards? Claim someone else today...

Err, would own up to apple juice on my weetabix whilst reading the paper. Never read the paper whilst fuelling the car though.

What if the box says Milk but having orange juice inside it?

Depends on whether you are watching what you are doing... I reckon most people would stop pretty quickly... which is what the poster who mentioned the smell was on about... Petrol has a wiff which is pretty noticable for us diesel drivers...

I once put toothpaste on my razor.

Well at least your face would smell fresh and you wouldn't get any decay.

I've almost put orange juice on my weetabix in a still half asleep stupor...

Morrisons' pump layouts don't help either. I nearly misfuelled the i10 last week; only the interruptor device on the filler neck saved me.

Many of their pumps have two nozzles for diesel and one for petrol, presumably since they stopped selling super grade. I picked up a nozzle, looked up at the pump and saw the "diesel" one in its socket, assumed I'd got the right one, and as I say only the device stopping the nozzle going into the filler neck alerted me to my mistake.

I have since sent an e-mail to Morrisons' head office alerting them to this potential problem.

We now all know what happens if diesel car filled with petrol.

But what happens if petrol car filled with diesel? I understand normally it should not happen due to diesel nozzle being larger, but in case of this incident, if diesel is dispensed from petrol nozzle misfuel can easily happen.

Will the consequences be as catastrophic?

>> But what happens if petrol car filled with diesel?

If there's still enough petrol in the mixture to get ignition then it'll run but be pretty smokey and smelly. The smoke will wreck your cat so needs a decent italian tuneup on the next tankful to save it.

If there's too much diesel to get ignition then while you're turning the engine over you're ejecting diesel into the exhaust, wrecks the cat pretty quickly.

That's for traditional port injected petrol engine, but the more modern direct injection common rail petrol i dunno. It wont damage the fuel pump (that's one of the big things for common rail diesel), but it would possibly destroy the injectors? Maybe you'd be lucky and it would just clog the fuel filter but i think that's wishful thinking.

Ah, that'll be the day. Vintage port for classic cars, presumably.....:)
