Which car rental company is best? - Auntie Lockbrakes
I'm about to book a hire car for 2 weeks' rental in the UK this month, picking-up at Heathrow. Best deal I can find via the online travel websites is for an Astra from Alamo. However, for the same price I can book direct with Hertz and get a "Corsa". (It'll doubtless be a Fiesta!)

I'm attracted to Hertz because there's no middleman (potential confusion?) and I'm a Hertz Gold member so might get treated more nicely?!

I just feel wary about Alamo for some reason! Any rational groundings for this?!

Alamo are connected to National in this country. Never hired a car from them but have had vans and not had any problem really

My father in law uses Alamo a lot and seems to get good service and regular upgrades, I use Hertz with my company and they are very professional, not particularly cheap but the cars tend to be new and clean but I rarely get upgraded )-:

I get quite a few cars from Hertz, they are like McDonalds in the fact that what you get is clean, tidy and fine for transport.

I'd recommended Enterprise though as their cars seem to be just a little bit bettter spec than most other rentals.

Good Luck.

I was often told that car rental companies based ner but not in the Airport had better deals that the majors who are all found in the airport terminal.

Thrifty springs to mind as being less expensive - assuming you are paying your own bill it might be worth investigating.

Alamo/National are fine.

Whoever you go with, check your price carefully. Make sure all the "excesses" are covered, including damage to glass and tyres.

Nothing tasty then? ;-)

Can you do that through the big brand renters? ~2 months ago with Europcar i had to go with an specialist insurer (only £12 mind) to get that level of cover for driving in Poland.

I recently hired something from a specialist 1 man band outfit in Holland and the insurance deals he was re-selling were fantastic compared to what any of the big brands do. There's more risk overall i suppose with this type of outfit though.

Used to hire through Hertz most weeks and was always well treated - made it up through there gold card scheme to the presidents circle and used to nearly always get an upgrade - had some decent motors.

Only tried to use enterprise once - booked a people carrier while ours was in the body shop. Three weeks notice given, and the day before they rang to say they didn't have any seven seaters. Left us in a awkward position the day before a holiday. Luckily Avis were able to supply one, but that said I have had bad experience's with them to.

Have a look around the net and you may find a discount code for Hertz - they have many affiliations with airlines etc.

I've used Sixt in Germany and Spain a number of times. Very easy, no hassle, and no trying it on with damage, remaining fuel, etc.

Well, I've shopped around for weeks on the www and it comes down to Alamo or Hertz. Reckon I'll stick with Alamo. Let's hope they have lots of shuttle buses serving the terminal! Isn't it annoying when you're waiting for your courtesy bus and all the other companies' buses come by before yours?!
