CCTV via internet - whats available? - BobbyG
I have computerised tills in my shops that connect to the internet via a wired router.

Is it possible to attach CCTV cameras directly to the router in some way that would make it viewable on my works computer? Or alternatively a separate computer in my office that all my shops CCTV is connected to, recorded onto hard disk and thus cutting back the need for a hard disk in each shop?

The camera would not be able to connect to the shop computer (till) as this is a purpose built retail till.

As you know by now I am not very computer literate etc but I am sure there must be something out there that sort of fits the bill?

I think there must be such a system. Last year we stayed in a five star appartment in Blackpool rather than risk the dodgy hotels. The owner welcomed us with a tour and pointed out the indoor/outdoor CCTV which they said they could monitor from their computer in their own house 3mls away.

TBH we'd have rather thrown the odd drunk off the front step than had these intrusive cameras.

If you google for

"intitle:ptz inurl:view"

Here's an example -- webcam.hpcc.nd.edu/view/view.shtml

or lakecam.engr.wisc.edu/view/view.shtml

You can get a play about hands on. Most will be set to low resolution for web use. These Axis cameras go for around £180 a piece and all they need is a network cable and a power cable.

Remote recording is possible too + you can secure them rather than folks leaving them always accessible.

If you google for "sample/LvAppl/" that's examples of Canon's offering, same idea but not as good IMO.

There's a crowd called "mobotix" do a camera with a good web interface but pricey. Not sure about remote recording support.

1 Camera will hammer your shops internet connection though, so you probably want to keep the hard disk in shop, and just remote in when needed?

its not easy
ive tried a couple of systems and after a while they always crash
they were also a devil to set up
my solution would be a camera/s and hard drive hidden but advising customers and staff they are being recorded so you are complying with the law (remember a customer can demand to see the recording for good cause)so put a sign up,remember after 3 days people forget they are being recorded so revert to their old ways whether thats playing tunes on the till or slagging off the punters etc

This appeared in an email from maplin:

Looks like a complete security solution which would do exactly what you want.

I think I also spotted some b grade stock of something similar but £250 instead of £399
