 Adverts coming? - Focusless
Just had a long wait for the Discussion home page to load, and Firefox said it was waiting for www.autotrader.co.uk (which doesn't seem to want to load in another window).

I think this is a good sign - does the site have financial backing?

...does the site have financial backing?...

I was wondering the same thing, although it's only just started so there's plenty of time for that and all the other things to develop.

I would be prepared to stump up a few quid, except in another way I wouldn't because subscription means very few new members will bother to join.

If you look at the page source, the reference to autotrader is:

(script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.autotrader.co.uk/CARS/common/_make_model.js")

(replacing angled btackets with ordinary brackets to avoid display issues)

I'm not a web expert, but perhaps this supplies the list of makes/models in the dropdowns?

Actually, having an autorader ad is more of a handy link, and feels less like an advert

And no doubt Ling will have a link on here in the shake of a lambs tail.

True - I didn't mean to imply that I am against adverts, especially when they keep a site free to use.

Autotrader on this site? Not now there isn't.

Ads will come at some stage. Might as well. Provided they are not too intrusive or have horrible Flash to slow things down they should be ok.
... now who does the best paying ads?

Must just be used for the dropdowns then.

Eurgh, ack, ptui, well said.

Sublte good adds are probably best. The problem is they don't pay well and its why the other site ended up with the god awful flash things which probably turned people away. I had to turn flash off on my mobile phone purely because of that site.

Google ads seem the easiest to do for now. They won't generate a lot but then they will be better than nothing, don't have flash and will be easy to implement.
Maybe later on today.

I thought Google ads should be here to help pay for the site's existence. It's Flash ads that I hate.

In fact when/if the Apple iPad (aka the big iPod touch) comes out it does not support Flash so a site using Flash adverts won't display them on that. Not sure if I'll be getting an iPad or not yet though. Possibly.

there is absolutely no use for an IPAD. I mean what does it actually do?

The iPad does this of course.

Hi all. I think some ads are a good thing, but I hate it when sites swamp you with slow ads .. just makes me reach for my adblocker which I try not to do as I realise no sites are free to keep running.
