 Server migration - car4play
FYI At some point today I am planning on migrating this server to another host. Because I have to dump the database and run it back into the new host it may mean a loss off a couple of posts if we are unlucky.

...are we allowed to suggest which ones...? ;-)

BAU then.
 Server migration - car4play
ok -all done. Let me know of any issues
 Server migration - car4play
It's erratically slow for me. i.e sometimes blindingly quick and sometimes really slow before it replies. However, I am currently doing a backup from our NAS box to the cloud which has been running a few days now and saturating the upload, so it's almost certainly this in my case.

The hosting server is barely ticking over and the database server is running at 5% CPU. i.e nothing appears to be struggling

How is it for everyone else?
 Server migration - Zero
Yup very inconsistent here, fast the majority of the time, and hanging now and again

So slow that I thought it wasn't working.

Seems to take ages to deal with my request, though once it deals with it, it does so very quickly.

Very slow.
 Server migration - car4play
I'll increase the size of the machine - it has to be powered off though to do this and it can take up to 10 mins.
 Server migration - No FM2R
Don't know if you've done that yet, but it is still punishingly slow for me.
 Server migration - Bobby
ditto

This is too crap for words. I'll try again in a day or so.
 Server migration - Crankcase
About 30 seconds to load a new thread for me.

Apparently there’s a specific setting within the database just for this effect.

:-)

I'm using the new hoster's managed database service. Seems that others have found the same issue with performance compared with just hosting it yourself.
Strange thing is that all their metrics on the db server show it is hardly on tick over so I have no idea why it is so slow.
 Server migration - car4play
I also host a cycling forum on the same server as this and this one uses a local database. Loads just fine which implies that this hosts managed database service is cr*p
 Server migration - Crankcase
... And now it's all instant, if it stays.
 Server migration - car4play
It seems to be completely temperamental. As it's a managed service just like Amazon's RDS you don't get a lot of control over it.

Seems others are having the same issue:

I'll migrate to a local instance and see
 Server migration - car4play
Ok - this is now on a local database... I think we've made the point that their managed service is no good at all
 Server migration - henry k
it is fast enough for me. Thank you.
 Server migration - car4play
No contest - local vs managed - local must be at least 10x quicker and consistent too

Looks like a local outfit; not an escape from CC...

Having worked with I T guys for years here’s my twopence worth.
Have you tried switching it off and on?
 Server migration - Rudedog
From the post timings on here I guess nobody else had issues first thing this morning getting on?

I had a page appear that I've never seven before with loads of IT jargon filling the screen.... been out all day but seems ok now.

It was a general problem which we all had. I mailed Stephen once I saw it and it went away soon after.
 Server migration - car4play
Has this been on and off all day. I restarted the database server at 10:20 this morning. Presumably it gets stuck at other times?

The default config is probably no good so I have now used the same as we have on our other servers that haven't migrated yet so we can see how that goes.
 Server migration - smokie
've been around a reasonable amount and only saw the problem which I mailed you about. Been OK otherwise, no errors and quick enough. But I may have missed some.

Oh Fab, we are now being used as live lab rats..........

Yup - you're not that important

A torture you inflicted on customers for how many years?

You helped, plus they paid for the privilege.

That's exactly what I did to the database server when it was complaining this morning!
