..post 9/11 (very early 2004) we had a winter visit to NY with the kids.
We had queued for quite a long time to get access to the Statue of Liberty (or at least the island - the statue was out-of-bounds), when we passed a sign with the comprehensive set of prohibited items, which included no knives "of any kind at all".
I had my Swiss Army knife in my pocket, and not wanting to waste the time already queued, rather than bailing out I decided I'd try to hand it over to security, and hope I could get it back on the way out.
The Park Ranger doing the security checks (something to do with the area being a State park) looked at the proffered knife, looked at me, and then said "put it in your pocket, keep it there, and don't tell anyone".
Even at the age of 13, my daughter subsequently out of earshot accused him of racial-stereotyping (I don't think WASPs were then seen as quite the threat some might be considered now!).
