I'd never really thought of it before but the likes of MG, where the cars are imported, are heavily dependent on suitable vessels then road transport to get cars registered. MG had at least 4 boats come in last month loaded with cars, often around 2000 apiece IIRC.
They usually dock at Bristol then of course there needs to be about 250 x 8 car transporters to move them elsewhere (maybe some go by rail).
I only happened on this because mine was delivered to Southampton (allegedly in error) and they couldn't get transport to take it to Bristol where their checking in facility is, then onwards to the dealer, hence a couple of weeks extra delay on my delivery.
I was asked if they could register mine in Nov even though I wouldn't get it till Dec, which I was OK with. That's not unusual is it, when they are either trying to achieve a sales target or get a score in the sales tables.
