My son spent some time working in Myanmar, filming the assembly of a new portable power generation system. Lovely, warm, friendly people; he has maintained some contacts and is very distressed by events there.

Because its the norm in that country, and not unexpected.

I don't know much about it except my mate holidayed there some years ago because it was just starting to allow tourism and he thought he'd get there before it got too crowded.
As I recall he was surprised by how few people had phones and how relatively backward it was.
