Not a bad shout Peter. As some will be aware, we are pretty keen mountain bikers. Some of the venues we visit are accessed by fairly steep rough tracks. The Merc copes fine with almost all of them, if you take it steady, but there are are some where we take the Qashqai in preference because of its greater ground clearance. Never consciously wished for 4 wheel drive though, our 2WD Nissan is on Crossclimates, and the E is currently on full winters and neither has ever caused any concern even on the steepest of rough tracks and periodic snow/ice.
As you you infer, the Qashqai isn't a hair shirt choice either, the newer ones are very nicely appointed.
Might be wrong, but I think the autos are CVTs mind. Not sure how they are to drive, they may be fine, but I gather they're not to everyone's taste.
Edit - if you did get a Qq though LL, do be aware that the door mirrors can just randomly fall off ( allegedly ) ;-)
