I've just spent nearly an hour trying to sort out a tax payment on dividends. Previously I was well under the tax limit but the allowance changed for the last tax year and I am caught. I reckon I owe about £35.
First I rang the helpline as instucted on the website. Their voice recognition robot notes that its about tax on dividends. I was then put on a queue for about 10 minutes. The robot then tells me they are busy and it may be worth going online to update them. So I drop off the call.
I then spend 10 minutes setting up an online account in the Govt Gateway. My account shows me useful income and pension info but I can see no way to input dividend income.
Back to my robotic friend. And another 20 minute wait to speak to a pleasant young Welsh chap. He takes the dividend details and confirms that he doesn't think I could have done it online!
They must put hundreds of people through this......................
