They say it comes in 3's. I sincerely hope so,

Medically I am fully loaded for 2019 I think

!/ Diagnosis of colorectal cancer, op to come in March
2/ Lost (ie had knicked) my glasses in Guadeloupe, went to optician, been told I have onset cataracts.
3/ Just back from A&E, dog has broken my finger (in two places) appointment at fracture cinic to come.

Must be it for 2019, surely?

The crap keeps coming I think. Have you got arthritis yet?

I'm pretty sure I was told last time that I have nascent cataracts, but that basically just about everybody does. What matters is whether they become troublesome. At least it's very treatable.

A common complaint is, when driving at night, there is flare around oncoming head lights.
SWMBO had her cataracts done privately at Moorfields just a few years ago.
She was then able to dump her thick small heavy lenses for "normal" ones.
At that time NHS would only pay for simple , single lens implants but privately bi focals were available.
No idea what the current situation is.

No need to train your hound for a new role.

My best wishes for a full recovery x 3

I would strongly recommend Cobham NHS Hospital for your cataract procedure. I had mine done there 4 or 5 years ago, and I can't fault them. It is operated by a private company, but under the NHS - whatever that is called.

I wouldn't count on it.

Where are you having your cancer surgery done?

Good Luck BTW!

Much as we have publicly and forcefully disagreed in these forums, Zero, I do wish you all the very best results from your upcoming surgery.
BTW - cataracts are easy-peasy and I'm sure the results of treatment, when its ready to be done, will delight you.

Fracture clinic at St Peter's is upstairs. Always strikes me as a bit odd. Fine when lifts are working, not quite as good for those with lower limb fractures when it isn't.
Best wishes and hope nothing else unwanted comes your way.

I had the lead folded in my hand, she jumped up to grab it, pulled it through my hands, my r/h ring finger went into the carabiner, and 21 kilos of dog broke the carabiner, but only after it broke my finger in two places.

Its a straight forward set of fractures, clean and not displaced (well it is after I bent it back into place) They will just leave it it buddy strapped I guess,

That car of yours really should be taken out for regular runs. It doesn't do them any good to stand still.

Ta all. Its not life threatening, been caught well early, but it is life changing. I am into hospital on the 20th March, and will set a target of recovery and adapting to compete at a dog show on the 27th April.

I was woken at sparrow spit by a nurse shaking me vigorously and heard her say "it's OK, he's wearing ear plugs". Fellow patient claimed she thought I'd popped my clogs.

I hope that things all work themselves out successfully.

But bearing in mind the thread title, I hope for your sake the crap doesn't stop at 2 :)

Hospital stays can be entertaining if you keep your sense of humour intact - take your camera with you and you may be able to increase your YouTube revenue stream.

Our resident medic has been noticeably absent from this thread - any reason Ly?

Best of luck with the cancer surgery.
My surgery went fine, 8.5 years ago. Trying to get mobile is essential BUT moving/trying to sit up in bed / get out of bed was difficult.

It will probably be a 2 week stay after the operation & they do not want the bowels to move - 2 weeks constipation is a hurdle & a half to get through.

You get tablets, liquids, suppositories but it really requires dynamite.

>> It will probably be a 2 week stay after the operation & they do not

I'm going in on a Wednesday, most of the op will be Laparoscopic, with a larger bit opened to get the tumour out in one piece. I'm expecting be discharged on the Monday, tho more likely the Tuesday because thats the day the multidisciplinary colorectal cancer team meet. So at most 6 days, you dont want to hang around in hospital, they are full of sick people, who knows what you might catch.

The worse thing is repeatedly being woken up by a HCA to take obs, and then being asked if you would like something to help you sleep.
I hope crap stops at 3 - Manatee
Being woken up was not the problem for me on a cardiac ward, it was getting any sleep at all amidst all the bleeping monitors and flashing alarms. I hope you fare better at night than I did, and of course that the op and recovery go well.

Gratuitous and probably unnecessary advice, make sure your 'personal representative' is briefed to keep on top of them if you should be less than fully able to stick up for yourself at any time. Dangerous places, hospitals, and you need an advocate should you be unable to conduct your own defence for any reason.

All sounds like a bit of a bummer Z, good luck with it all. Have you actually decided what to do about the car, if, well, y'know, you're not going to be needing it so to speak...? Just that I have this idea...totally in the spirit of helping out of course...

All the best for your operation Zero.

Re cataracts, you won't regret the op. It was very straightforward and pain-free. Even now, 16 months on, I often stop and marvel at how much sharper things are, and mine weren't particularly bad.
I hope crap stops at 3 - Ambo
One of my cataract operations was done 32 years ago, the other 28. Both are still fine today, my birthday (I can't remember which one).
I hope crap stops at 3 - Slightlyfatdirector
It was a particularly crap 2018 for me last year, so you have my sympathy, although most of my woes were very small compared to yours.

Lurched from problem to problem after buying a house that turns out to be the property from hell (less hellish now after months of work and 000's of £, but still..) and then topped of with a major health issue out of the blue two weeks before Christmas.

Whilst waiting for an op at the Royal Marsden, I found it fascinating to see and hear the diversity other patients in there.

In my 'group' in for surgery there was a small group of us including a very elderly and frail Chelsea pensioner, a quiet lady, myself and a slightly brash chap who I heard used to be a builder but was now retired (aged late 40's / early 50's) and living in the country, and was a 'shooting / fishing' type of chap.

We were in a pre-op ward, with just curtains round our respective beds, so difficult not to hear all discussions with everyone in the room, and he would have clearly known that, as we all went into the room one after another.

My god, he was obnoxious! Continuing to complain about anything and everything, not being pleasant or even courteous with the staff there, and after he was left alone he then uses his mobile to call some people where he loudly complains to them about everything in the hospital, and then starts using really quite extreme language and threats to whoever was on the other line about telling anyone about his condition.

He was right next door to the Chelsea Pensioner who whilst frail, was not deaf. I was horrified frankly and what a sad thing for that poor chap to listen too whilst worrying about his own day's treatment.

All I could think was that the very unpleasant guy probably deserved all that he had, and I was hoping that his day continued to go downhill - as long as it did not further cause unpleasantness to more staff. How they put up with such morons I don't know......

The care I had was fab, with lovely and professional and efficient staff.

Anyway, all the best for a speedy recovery from all your ills, and pleasant weekend to you all!

I hope crap stops at 3 - zippy
>>very unpleasant guy

Eldest, tells me that the nursing staff get a feel of good and bad people very quickly and the bad ones just don't get the niceties that the good ones do.

Its little things like offering visitors a cup of tea if they are not busy or being first in the queue to be helped to the shower etc.
I hope crap stops at 3 - Zero
>> >>very unpleasant guy

It was like a long running scene from TV medical soap.

We had a screamer, and I mean heard all over the hospital and carpark screamer, a fight between patients, and midnight wandering aged dementia man.

I'm not sure the others twigged but when you stripped out the incoherent mad ramblings and patched bits together, I am 100% sure he was a matelot in submarine service in the Med fleet during WW2. can't be many of them left
I hope crap stops at 3 - Zero
Well I out of hospital post op. Went in on the 20th, out yesterday 25th.

I can safely say this has been the most painful and debilitating 6 days of my life.

Despite all that everything has gone to plan and outcome and the ileostomy should be reversed in 6 months

Yes, Good News.

Feel free to ask if you have any practical questions rather than medical.

Our Health provider has a Stoma nurse system; yours may. They know more than the hospital medics, and certainly more than the GP. (in my experience.

Thanks neil, The care plan has been very joined up pre to post op, seen the stoma pre and post op, and on her house call list.

Technical Question, are you one or two piece system?
I hope crap stops at 3 - neiltoo
Hi,

I started off with a single part system, and have been with this for 99% of the time.
I use a Dansac drainable pouch, sealed to the skin with Oakmed stoma paste. The hole in the pouch needs to be just a little bigger than the stoma, and less paste than you think you need is enough. You will soon get to regulate this. I generally change every two days, more frequently than this and the paste is difficult to remove from the skin.

I was in Malaga at New Year some time ago, and had a lot of difficulty with leakage.
I ran out of my supplies, and had to get some locally - at great expense. I could only get two part bags. I am reasonably dextrous, but had great difficulty locating and removing the bag for several days until I got home and back to my normal kit. My Elderly blind friend seems to manage perfectly well, so it may just be me. If you can, try both types.

When you are out and about, don't hesitate to use disabled loos, and face off anyone who suggests you don't look disabled - I've done this in Italian. You need space to work.

You will have "accidents" which initially are depressing. It may happen to me once every three to four weeks. It seems to be when the motions are particularly fluid, but not necessarily. It depends on your mental attitude - mine is fairly robust. My problem was ulcerative colitis, which involved me being on the loo for three quarters of my waking life. I viewed the operation with blessed relief.

I'm sorry if this is all too much for anyone, but I have always been very open about my state - in fact it's a cause of some amusement with my close friends. I do it to ensure that anyone with an unusual bowel habit that lasts more than a few days sees a doctor. Caught early enough, most problems are eminently curable.

I hope you can quickly get used to it, and that the reversal goes according to plan. My surgeon and the stoma nurse both encouraged me to eat my usual diet - however, remember that bananas turn your motions black, and beetroot can look as though you are bleeding!

All the best
Neil
