Death of popular North West BBC TV presenter - Stuartli
I know from past references by forum members that they appreciated the work and TV and radio appearances by a well known North West media presenter.

So it's very sad to report the sad and unexpected passing of Dianne Oxberry, who worked as the weather presenter on BBC TV's North West programmes broadcast from Manchester, as well as regularly featuring on the Inside Out series and local radio stations.

Good grief. I don’t watch much TV and thought she was still presenting. Tragic news indeed

Well known? Never heard of her. A forum search shows there have only been 3 previous mentions of her, 2 of them from you ;)

RIP anyway.

The North West covers a huge area - just because you haven't heard of her doesn't mean that millions of others haven't.

Certainly the news of her death has been covered extensively on the BBC's national news and rolling news programmes, some of which is due to the fact she was working with Simon Mayo and others earlier in her career.

It mostly covered on BBC because she worked for the BBC.

Well known? I'd never heard of her

That's a bit unfair as you're out of her audience cohort either by geography or age.

You live in SE England and her TV fame was on local service for NW. She'd previously been part of Mayo's Morning Show on Radio 1 in and on Children's TV before re-training as a meteorologist.

No doubt losing one of their own affects BBC staff though quite a few 5Live presenters were audibly upset. Amongst other things she'd been a significant player in their Women's Support movement.

Indeed.

I remember when Alec Guiness died and his obit on the news was a weeny section compared to Robin Day's.

I think you'll find it only covers the North West and no other areas ;)

Well whoopie do. I still haven't the faintest idea who she was, or what she did.

I think you'll find it covers a huge area of the UK. Just because you are outside it doesn't mean that those within it and, in fact, many of those living around the UK haven't been aware of Dianne due, of course, through her her radio and TV work over the past quarter of a century.

Perhaps you haven't the faintest idea who she was, but believe you me it's many a million more than who know who you are or what you do.

However, as I've pointed out before, it's not surprising that quite a number of forum members who were regular contributors in the past have quietly slipped away due to such sarcastic comments as those posted above.

What exactly are we arguing about here? Whether or not a recently deceased person was famous or not? And how famous and where famous?

And that would matter one way or the other why?

And how big the North West is?

Dear God.

Only in some circles.

At least Diane Oxberry had some claim to fame. Headline in yesterday’s Times

I think we're arguing about an unneccesarily ascerbic comment.

And a Southern-centric view of the country.

Oh that's alright then. For a minute I feared it was something trivial and irrelevant.

p.s. I am 7,257 miles SW of the Watford Gap as the crow flies. I automatically win any Southern-Centric discussions.

Nope, only the North West - the clue is in the name.
It doesn't cover the North East, Midlands, South East, South West, or anywhere else in-between.

Admit it, you had a secret crush on her, didn't you? Maybe even a poster on your bedroom wall of her standing in front of a weather map, part of her skirt risen, and scratching her bum?

These days I think we (and I include myself) take other people being offensive by our own standards far more seriously than we should.

Being offensive ought to be far more tolerated than it is.

[And Dave,s comment was NOT offensive, although it was in questionable taste. But then, so is Dave].

Stuartli seems to think it was. He appears to have flounced as he's not been seen here since the 14th Jan.

Still can't believe what I said upset him so badly, but if it did, then I apologise (and to anyone else for that matter). If we were all the same, then life would be boring.

I'm not sure anyone who thinks a 1.4 Jetta is the best car in the world really is qualified to make a physiatric diagnosis. However to be fair you do seem to have hit the nail on the head.

Perhaps Stuartli is a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists are probably not, on the average, great judges of cars, but you say he's got you pegged.

Anyway - although I admit that I hadn't heard of Dianne Oxberry, I don't think that whether or not I have heard of a person makes them or their passing more or less interesting.

Before I ditched the Torygraph, one of my favourite bits was the obituaries - the lives of some amazing people I had never heard of.

I am in the North West, so knew of Diane Oxberry. Used to find her very attractive, as a hormone riddled 15 year old.

I'm not surprised that many people have never heard of her. I wouldn't have a clue who the weather dolly is in other areas of the country. Seems daft that certain people can get wound up so easily.

I can assure I know the name of none of the "weather girls"* on local or national TV even those who appear in my area. In my world they merely faces that deliver weather forecasts, more often than not of questionable and dubious voracity.

In fact the only weather person name I can recall is Michael "there is no hurricane coming" Fish

Ulrika Jonsson and John Kettley. The only two weathermen I can remember.

Shirley you've heard of Siân Lloyd? The Uk's longest-serving female weather forecaster, having appeared on ITV Weather for 24 years (according to wiki)

Her death was also reported in the Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph; perhaps in other newspapers also.
Apparently, she found fame as a sidekick with Steve Wright and Simon Mayo on Radio 1.
She was well known outside of the North West.

On a slight tangent, for those who travel the world, do other countries have the same fascination with weather forecasts as we do?

I would assume there would be many countries with very consistent weather that they don't need to be told that tomorrow will be the same as today?
Death of popular North West BBC TV presenter - sooty123
Can't say I bother looking much as most places I visit have very settled weather with little variation from the normal.

Although the US seemed to have a very keen interest about the local weather, they'd give it a fairly big prominent position in the news show, equal to the uk I'd say. Canada similar.
Death of popular North West BBC TV presenter - smokie
They have a whole TV channel dedicated to the weather in the US weather.com/

Mind you they have dedicated channels for a lot of things...

I have been visiting the colonies recently.

In Melbourne on Friday 4th Jan it was 42 degrees C (how do I do a degree sign?) in the morning. It dropped to 20 degrees C in the afternoon.

The Aussies certainly have a fascination with the weather.
