Does any poster check tax payments online? If so, can they kindly say how?
I have recently paid an amount due via bank online transfer, a method I had never used before, giving the details on the reverse of the demand statement - HMRC account number and sort code, also my personal reference number. The amount was paid and these details appeared correctly on my bank statement.
I would now like to find confirmation from HMRC that they have actually received the money. I have tried all the ways into the HMRC labyrinth I can find, including Government Gateway and Personal Tax Account but encountered numerous complications, such as denials that access codes *they* have sent me are correct. I don't want to telephone them as I am rather deaf.

Whilst not answering your question, I can also say my experience with the online HMRC stuff not to be the smoothest.
Had a P800 last week. Log in and claim your £350 they say.
Go to the login. Ah, we need your Governemnt Gateway ID they say.
Find that, and the password. No good they say, reset your password here.
No idea why, but do that. Great, they say, now put in your access code we've sent to a mobile we won't identify.
No access code turns up. No matter, they say, set an alternative number.
Do that, landline rings, gives me an access code. Great, they say, we understand your ID, and your password, and your access code, but now you still need to identify yourself with your passport.
Yes, but I don't HAVE a current passport. No problem, they say, click here to identify yourself with your last P60.
Some hours later, find the P60. Ah, they say, your session has expired, start all over again.
So I start all over again, confident that THIS time I'll be sorted. Ah, they say, tell us two details from your P60.
So I enter those. No they say, that doesn't match anything we know about, can't help you. You can ring us up if you like.
By this time my head has long since shed explosive grey matter on the wallpaper and I've devoured an entire box of blood pressure pills.
Notice small print on P800 also says "or just wait a a couple of months and we will decide to send you a cheque, some time in the next couple of months after that".
I've decided to wait and spend it at Christmas, though that might not be this one. I also assume my P60 is wrong, and can't decide if I care.
Bah.

Very much the kind of experience I had with my payment.
|
I use the Gateway to do my personal tax and self-assessment, can't say I have ever had an issue and always get email confirmation of any payments or submissions.
Never had a problem with the access code either, always arrives within a few seconds during login.
|
But do you use the transfer system (I believe it is called CHAPS), which is what I used, or the alternative by which you give your email address and a cash card number to let HMRC take the money themselves? This alternative is the one I used before and does in fact result in an email acknowledgement. The CHAPS system does not allow for the inclusion of an email address with the transfer.

I just pay on a debit card for self-assessment. They take the money on the day I make the payment, it then oddly shows as a possible refund available until later in the year when it then clears the balance, I think it was a few weeks before the January deadline.
HMRC told me the money is set aside until they call upon it to clear the outstanding balance, odd system really, you would expect it to clear the balance immediately but no, but I get email confirmation when it is initially paid.

Had another go today. Gateway ID and password fine. Then it says "now enter the access code you can see in the app". What app? What are they on about? I'm using a PC.
So had to say "can't do that" and then it's P60 hell again. I think I've seen part of the problem though. Retired during the last year, and the latest P60 hasn't got any pre-retirement earnings on it. So I think it's wrong.
That doesn't explain why it won't take the 2017 one either though, as it clearly says use either for ID.

Did you try entering the code in the PC? Then you might get through or - like me - be told that the code is wrong (a score of times).
I solved my problem by referring it to my accountant and it took her about three minutes to confirm HMRC had received the money. I conclude that accountants have a hotline to them but I would really like to be able to check this online myself.
Thanks to all for shared experiences.

I get the access code for Gateway sent to me as a txt on my mobile, I don't 'do' apps.
|
Nor do I. Hence my confusion as to what the message means.
Anyway, mailed HMRC via their "problem with this web site" page, and had a lovely bit of boilerplate text back saying "we need to identify you, if we can't identify you, then you can't use the website", which seems a tad circular when the identification fails, but there we are. So no actual answer as to why I can't make it work.

Gruesome. I had to file something yesterday and it took me most of the afternoon to tell them "10,000 shares at £1 each for Mr X."
|
Can you re-apply for Gateway perhaps? I am sure I have done that for my dad when he renews his license every few years since he never notes down the login details.
|
Gateway bit is fine. It's the bit where they say "enter your pay and NI details from your P60" that fails.
Thought I'd try talking to a real person today, so rang the helpline.
11 minutes of computerised "please say your name, postcode, NI number, set up a voice password" and so on, then a further 7 minutes on hold, before...
Real person. Explain my problem - the website accepts pay details from P60 but not NI details.
"Bless you", she says," this is the TAX line. You need the NI line".
Long sigh from me.
She puts me through to the "NI" line.
I explain again.
"Bless you", says he, "yes I can see your NI contribution last year amount the web wants, but due to security policies, I'm not allowed to tell you it. Find your last payslip from previous employer, add a bit, take away a bit, and maybe you'll get somewhere near it. Or wait until next April and maybe the next P60 will work. Bye."
I'm no further forward.
Not easy, is it.

No, it isn't - but it must boost employment for accountants.
|
I think we are just as frustrated as everyone else. I've been trying to resolve an issue with a department that is very difficult to contact.
|
I have to make tax payment for a trust. Nothing shows up online for about 2 months.
The money's gone but I'd like to know HMRC have actually received it. When I've succeeded in phoning them they just say Oh yes, but it won't show until we've processed it through our records.
|
Well, for me - found the last payslip, did what they told me. No dice, account locked.
I'm officially giving up and waiting months for the cheque. Just hope I don't need their website again.
|
All sounds very complicated and tiresome. I'm glad I'm on a bog standard PAYE and always have been.
