With the current emphasis on diversity I don't see why they are allowed to report the driver's age yet they are not allowed to report his colour. It's not necessarily of any relevance.

The Beeb even reported that someone tweeted "Beats me why a 73-year-old is driving a car like that anyway.""

because it could be relevant to the circumstances.

You must have missed the diversity training, as I did. But SWMBO had to do it, and they weren't allowed to buy birthday cards with even a hint of mocking someone's age. It wasn't a government body she worked for either.

Its a news item, it was factually relevant, has nothing to do with diversity.

It's no more factually relevant than the colour of someones skin, or their sex or religion is it? Not until it's known whether it was a relevant factor...

Of course it is factually relevant, its as factually relevant if someone had said it was an 18 year old.

Now I suggest you start asking the DVLA why you need your license renewed at 70 and every three years after, and tell them its against "diversity rules"

What Z says. Since there's mention of DVLA driver assessment being offered it seems probable Police think there's some form of incapacity. While age may be irrelevant the probability is that it's central to ability to drive safely.

Race never is.

Diversity direction on Birthday cards seems a bit heavy. Buying a humorous age related card could potentially cause offence. Surely though you'd only buy one if you knew the recipient well enough to know it'd be taken in right spirit.

Actually I seem to recollect a young admin being delegated to get a card for a staff member. Office head took one look and dumped it. IIRC the joke was a sexual double entendre rather than age related one. The admin was a straight laced Ozzie or Kiwi and hadn't 'got' the full meaning.

It is also standard journalistic practice to mention a relevant person's age when reporting events.

Whenever a name isn't give you'll usually get "an XX year old (wo)man has been reported to the YYYY" etc, sometimes qualified by "we cannot name the person due to legal reasons" (ie they are underage or giving their name would identify a person due anonymity).

4 weeks after they became news it still shows the Skripal's ages in each report:

It is a wonder how anyone that easily offended could go through a full lifetime in one piece.

Nothing to do with relevance either. It's all to create interest.

Age is a Protected Characteristic under the Equalities Act 2010, however there is no discrimination in the report it is factual and relevant (for the reasons Bromp gives). The article is OK.
