Mrs. H took the i10 in for its first service today. Having seen horror stories of megabucks servicing charges to offset the cheap initial cost of these cars, the bill of £137.27 was quite bearable.
Whilst she was down there, I was waiting in A&E to be treated for a wasp sting which had gone wrong over the weekend. She mentioned this to the dealership, they moved their schedules around and put her through straight away so that she could be back in time to pick me up.
Top marks to J&J Motors, Swansea.

£138 is what I have been quoted for my first service for my Panda so I wonder if its a standard rate for city cars? I was also in A&E this weekend for a stuck ear plug.
I suspect the scary bills are more for things like if the Mrs has a habbit of burning out the clutch or eating brake pads than something standard like a basic service.

I think it's become one of those internet myths - if it's quoted enough times, it must be true.
Checking back on servicing costs during the last 7 years, by three different manufacturers, including Kia, and they are virtually the same. Take inflation into account, the non-Kia ones are dearer.
However, Kia doesn't offer "longlife" servicing (fortunately in my opinion), so to firms running fleets and selling them on after 3 years, overall servicing costs would be high.
Following gives standard service hours for Kia (and presumably equivalent Hyundai models) at '000s Kms:

Sorry can't find equivalent on Kia UK site.
Don't know how this compares with other manufacturers

>> Having seen horror stories of megabucks servicing charges
I never cease to be amazed that people will buy cars without checking out the servicing prices!
Mind you, I did that with Mitsubishi but the dealer lied to me, and then tried to charge even more than they'd quoted when the car was booked in.

That's what worried me. I did do a fairly basic check on running costs before buying the car, but it was actually less than I'd budgeted for; I suspect this is one of the more beneficial side-effects of loosening the restraints on dealer servicing.

What mileage was that at ?
It would be interesting to compile a list of models and servicing costs over the life of a vehicle with the owner. As a comparison the first service on SWMBO C4GP 1.6HDi was £162 last Nov. at 12.5k miles.
|
First service is scheduled for 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Ours had 7500 miles approx, and due service date was actually second week in Spetember but we're away then.

The problem is, the salesman says "first service £100, big service £200" and you think "thats not too bad."
Then it's service time, service bod says "first service £180, big service £300".

Then you find it is:-
£180 + VAT = £215, £300 + VAT = £353........................
Plus oil disposal of £5.00, washer fill £5.00, Sundries £10.00 (grease, rubber gloves, etc)
|
Part of the charge was for washer top-up, about £1.50 I think; will make a note to top it up to full before next service and ensure service manager knows that when I book it in.
Environmental charge a.k.a. oil disposal was about the same; howevere, these were all included in the quoted price, which is as it should be.

I have mentioned this before I still think its overr the top. I charge to cover my expenses but if I invoiced the following the customer will think I am taking the biscuit.
1) Tunup and defrag £27.50
2) Petrol and cost of travel to premises £2.50.
So a simple billing of £30 is far better. Next they will be itemising a percentage of their ultilities cost! Electricity 37p, gas 14p, telephone 12p.
