I have seen the crankshaft of a submarine ASR 16 diesel engine replaced without cutting the hull. I was in a diesel boat when a big end bearing wiped and damaged the crankshaft. Gibraltar dockyard removed two pistons and con rods, test ran the engine, and we returned to Portsmouth on one engine with the damaged one as as an emergency use only backup. Portsmouth dockyard changed the crankshaft. Plan "B" was for me to fly back from Gib for my wedding if there had been a lengthy delay.
