Perhaps it doesn't really matter much unless it is argued that the oil regenerates fast enough to supply our rate of extraction? That really would be worth discovering - not zero-oil but unlimited oil, for ever.

SASOL in South Africa makes extensive use of this method for producing fuels - they started off with coal, but are now using a lot of gas. It's rather energy intensive, but produces a high quality well defined fuel. I believe that Shell make use of Gas-To-Liquids petrol/diesel in their 'super' blends.

Spot on RichardW

SASOL started to produce road fuels from coal because of the fuel embargo during the apartheid years.

I was offered a job there but didn't take it up.

Has he? He has signed some bits of paper.

There is an interesting view near the end of CH News tonight.

"Don't mention climate change" and he did not but lots of jobs for the USA.
It was suggested that the push for energy saving will continue but not with government formal approval.

He's probably right, so he won't even have to deal with the ramifications of his actions.

Personally I don't hold completely to the fossil origins of oil. A good summary of the process without organic starting matter is here:
