62 penalty points & still legally allowed to drive - VxFan
A speeding driver who clocked up 62 points on his licence is still allowed to drive.

The West Yorkshire man was among 10,000 motorists legally driving on British roads last month, despite having excessive points.

Usually 12 points means a ban, but magistrates can choose not to enforce it in "exceptional cases".

From the above link:
"The DVLA noted there could be a delay between issuing penalties and a court sentence, but said the West Yorkshire motorway speeder had been dealt with and was still eligible to drive.
His points were mostly incurred from repeatedly speeding on a motorway, the BBC understands."

So no lessons learned for leniency..

Sometimes I despair.. :-)

I think the implication is that it would be possible to ramp up a significant number of speeding points during regular commuting at exactly the same location(s) before the NIP for the first offence dropped on your doormat.

For example, two weeks of return journeys at speed on a motorway where the overhead cameras had recently been activated without you noticing could easily result in 20 offences (nominally 60 points) within the 14-day NIP limit.

Ensuring all these offences were taken at a single hearing, and a really convincing plea of hardship, might result in the non-revocation of the license.

It would only be one instance of 'leniency', however, and the offender may well have learned lessons from it. If not, then the next set of points should result in a lengthy ban.

(FWIW, without the benefit of the evidence, I'm largely of the opinion that a lengthy ban was probably justified anyway, but, that *is* without the benefit of the evidence).

It makes a joke of the law, speeding becoming like mobile phone use. Unenforceable. Soon you will have to kill someone to get banned.

That's clearly completely wide of the mark. Speeding convictions are very enforceable as millions know to their cost and 109,660 motorists were banned last year.

Difficult to comment really on the cases in question without knowing the full facts.

Difficult to comment, what planet are you on! If 62 points isn't a serial offender what is, and what does he have to do to get banned? The full fact is that he has 62 points.

Yes it does seem extraordinary but perhaps there were extraordinary circumstances. As I said difficult to make an informed comment without more facts.

I'd certainly hope that anyone driving with 60+ points was, as suggested above, caught unawares by something.

OTOH the following is a below the line comment:

'"There are so many cameras that if you have to drive 50,000+ miles a year you are almost bound to get more than 12 points in three years. We are not dangerous drivers in fact we are probably the safest in the country as we drive so many miles.

"All my points were on motorways or dual carriageways."

Attitude/awareness problem there I think.

I love the idea of "I am super aware, safe and always see what's going on around me".

Well yes, unless its a speed camera or police car, then you appear to be blind and stupid and making up your own rules.
