Just wanna run this by the technically minded.

In town, the car heates up to about 1/4 up the temp gauage, but as soon as it gets up to any reasonable crusing speed, the temp dips down to cold again and then will creep up again i you are at slower speeds for any length of time. Doesnt get close to half on the gauge even if left idling.
Im assuming its the thermostat, especially with the car having been a cold run town car with low miles - fair assumption?

Could be, stuck open or missing completely.

could be something to do with the changed water pump?

I checked the bolts ( on the housing ) and they look original and undisturbed so its fair to assume that the thermostat is original I think.

Does the bottom of the radiator heat up in time with the heater producing warm air, if so then it sounds likely the thermostat is either stuck or missing as you both suspect, either way they're cheap enough to change.

Yeah I checked the heater worked after a reasonable warm up time and it blows pretty hot.

Does the top ose stay cool from cold while the engine is heating up?
On a 13 year old Diewoe, the ole stat bolts wanna stay just where they are due to corrosion,
I'd be inclined to flush the critter with Forte cooling system flush + back-flush it,
If I were thou stew, I'd out this pup - mucho pronto.

Could quite well be that the radiotor is clogged up worth checking when you put a new stat in.

I would flush it (both ways) for sure, but wouldnt a blocked rad make it overheat?

Indeed it would, but my thinking is that a 13 year old Diewoe with that sort of mileage must be well coated up, impeding flow, so rather than have the stat housing bolts snap off, I would take the line of least resistance (i.e. grief)

Classic symptems of the thermostat stuck open or missing, i have never known a clogged up cooling system to make a car run cool. But i agree with the others who say to be prepared for the bolts on the stat housing to snap !

OK thanks chaps, Im going to pick up a thermostat today although I think ill let me monkey replace it.
Is there any harm done by driving the car like it is for a week ( I want to get the Carina off the road and up for sale )? Am I right in thinking it will run a bit rich if it thinks the engine is cold?

When you replace it, try and buy just the thermostat. Some people will try and sell you the housing as well - an unnecessary expense as you can unclip the stat from the original housing.

Should be ok to drive around without any harm occuring.

I gave in and took it over my mech today rather than wait as I had a days insurance so figure may aswell use it.
He reckoned it was most likely thermostat stuck open and as has been mentioned already, only the bolts are an issue sometimes. Its easy to get at atleast though so labour costs low.

Same symptoms on my Escort - changed 'stat, no difference. Temp gauge went haywire 10 miles into a 100 mile journey - stopped, called AA out, use of an infra-red thermometer and unplugging things pinpointed... a dodgy temperature sender. :-p

Just to confirm, my radiator fan is operated by a separate thermoswitch - which operates correctly at just below 100deg C - so as long as heater blows consistently warm with no ice-cold spells, and fan isn't running, then my temperature gauge can be safely ignored.
