finally got some wheels! - so thinking of oil and filter change, but....the oil on offer in these parts of the right spec (VW 507.00) is currently £45 per 5L. I found this on Ebay but at the price I am dubious of quality.
Has anyone tried this Oil? - opinions welcome!
Thanks.

I would stick with a well known brand. You have to balance how often you are going to change the oil, oil quality, and risk of engine damage.
Look for engine oil sludge on the tube.
|
Never heard of them. Have you tried opie oils or car parts 4 less?
What type of octavia did you get in the end?
|
I'd go for a brand I knew. So this isn't much more:
www.amazon.co.uk/Total-181712-Quartz-Ineo-Liter/dp/B00AFXCKY6
And I've googled and found it cheaper than that even.

That's what I use in my Scooby doo.

Thanks for the suggestions! - will have a browse! - Octavia Ambiente 1.9 PDI DSG on an 08 plate. - good enough for short runs into town and daily Hound transport! ;-)

My mechanic pal just changed the oil on my Focus 1.6 diesel. He used Triple QX Synplus fully synthetic 5-30 grade. It states on the container that's it's for Ford vehicles. I don't have a high annual mileage and change the oil every year. About £20/£25 5l.
I'd never heard of it.

>>Triple QX Synplus
Is ECP's own brand - okay for a Ford but I wouldn't let it anywhere near my Subaru, knowlmean ;)
|
And my ex wouldn't go anywhere near a Subaru either.
She was a £10 75cl girl!

I've used it for years, on all sorts of cars. Never had any issues.

Weren't the VW Pumpe Düse engines particular when it came to oil and you really did need to stick to the right formulation. It wasn't a warranty issue although it was linked to long service intervals.
For the sake of a small difference in price, why take the risk.
|
Yes they were
Had one from new for five years
Never had any problems and engines go on forever but correct specification oil essential

Don't know anything about oil, but is it one of those products like, say Ibuprofen? As in the important ingredients in a named brand are absolutely identical to the no name brand, but you'll pay £4.95 for 8 in one version and 16p for 32 in the other version.
Oil is oil, isn't it, once you've agreed the relative percentage of whatever the components are? It's only squashed dead tiny things.
Unless of course, one version has something extra added. Snake, for example.
However, I refer the house back to my opening clause.

I look on oil as the engines lifeblood. Why spend £XXXX on a car and then put anything that looks like oil into its engine?

I'm with ^this Giza.

That's to mind is spot on, if it meets the spec for your particular car. I've never worried about the brand name on the front.

How do you know that the contents of the container meets the spec on the label? Manufacturers give the oil spec requirements and also recommend a brand. I believe that some manufacturers have chemical tracers in their oil for warranty reasons.

With TSO run down, the only systematic check is through the trade organisation that produces reports like the following link, which indicates that the UK agent hasn't quite grasped the meaning of the ACEA classification system. tinyurl.com/jtdmw35

How does anyone know?

As you can get fake components, including brake pads, I doubt if oil is any different.
|
If I ever need top up oil (unlikely) I would use this. It is less than half the price of the same spec oil from other high street retailers, if you can find 0W20 of the correct spec at all. I have only found the Mobil 1 version.
"As a sign of its Professional quality, Castrol EDGE Professional H also comes with a fluorescent signature colouration, when shone under a UV light. This visual demonstration is the signature proof point of Castrol EDGE Professional H, exclusive to Honda dealers".

I service all my own cars, I've used triple qx for the last six years or so. Lucikly none have had fussy specs for oil. Roughly £15 for 5L delivered.

My days of laying in a roadside gutter doing a car service are long gone.

Yeah i can imagine servicing a car whilst outside in a roadside gutter isn't very pleasant. Can't say I've ever serviced a car at the side of the road.

Lying in the gutter generally gives you the extra 120mm clearance. Very useful trick when accessing difficult to reach components.
(he said smugly, whilst pumping out the pit). :)

You seem to have that T shirt! :-)

I did that for 14 years and lived to tell the tale - quite enjoyable in the winter when you have to clear the snow orf the bonnet, stand there for two hours on impacted snow and ... the car is a non-runner :)

I work (mainly) outside, so in my own time, I much prefer servicing my cars inside thanks! :)

That is exactly what crossed my mind when I saw the difference in prices (£45 - £18)! - but in the end I took earlier advice and ordered the Total Ineo - £19.99 -5lts. just got to find the right filter now ;-). How I've missed owning a car! .....and I had a bloomin puncture yesterday as well, bloomin screw right through centre of tyre, luckily repairable!.

Cheers Chaps!
