 Man flu - Fursty Ferret
Who'd have thought that a head could produce so much snot? Started with a sore throat last Wednesday and got progressively worse until last night when I turned into a dripping, sneezing, spluttering mess. Apologies to everyone I've shaken hands with over the last week, as it's a truly evil beast.

Last night thoroughly unpleasant with 102F fever (I knew my Aldi thermometer would come in handy one day) and about 30 minutes sleep. Off to sulk and drip mucous in front of the TV. Send sympathy. And chocolate.

Had something similar that peaked around mid October. If yours follows the same pattern it will stop flowing but leave you with the acute pain behind the nose and the intense eyeball ache, which was much worse than the full flow phase. I had to get some decongestant to clear the sinuses. I also got better, then worse again at least three times. Wife is a born again Stoic so I got no sympathy at all.

I haven't had flu for a decade, which I put down to mostly working outside in fresh air, away from rooms full of infectious folk :-)

I haven't had proper flu since I was 14. I lost a fortnight. I suppose I'm pushing my luck, I should start going for the jeccies.

Howls about the ole woman, she must bring bugs home from work.

You obviously have a strong immune system - unlike the Ferret.

Most people only ever get flu once or twice in their lives
They often escape it completely. If you ever get flu you will know it. It isn't just a bad cold. Every bone in your body will ache and you will feel incredibly weak.

Indeed, if you only think you've got flu you haven't. If you've got it, you won't be in any doubt!

IIRC there was a test for is it flu or a cold ?
Place a £50 note on the floor. If it is not grabbed immediately then you do have flu. :-(

Same test for a bad back ;)

If by people you don't exclude those outside UK and include children, then Imperial College London study suggested that children get flu on average every 2 years, while adults get it on average every 5 years.

Above mentioned Imperial College London study suggested some people might not realise they had flu.

I thought "man flu" was just a jokey way of saying how pathetic men are with a simple cold, compared to women.

Anyway, SNAP, I've got it too, ff. It started exactly a week ago and the flow of green stuff is just beginning to abate. Someone told me once that Beecham's Powders and the like bring down your temperature, when it's better to try and sweat it out. I usually wear extra clothes in bed, when I have a cold, with that in mind. Seems to work for me, but I'd welcome comments on that strategy.

Treat a cold and it will last a week. Do nothing and it will be gone within 7 days.

:o)

Apropos this general subject, one of the best tips I ever got was to gargle with soluble aspirin to treat a painful sore throat.

Somebody told me this in January 1979 when I had the worst sore throat I had ever experienced. Agony swallowing. It was virtually instant relief.

Of course you must be able to gargle, or you'll drown, which is much worse.

I had 'flu last year for the first time in 20 years. Turned into pneumonia. Off work for a couple of weeks and a couple weeks more of only working mornings. Nasty, nasty.

>>one of the best tips I ever got was to gargle with soluble aspirin

These days, just take an Ibuprofen. Much, much more effective.

Was that in the days when quinine was effective against malaria?

Tonic water en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonic_water
Originally used as a prophylactic against malaria, tonic water usually now has a significantly lower quinine content
 Man flu - CGNorwich
Quinine must have been responsible for making made the British Empire what it was.

" Quinine can lead to constipation, erectile dysfunction, diarrhea, and/or vivid dreams. "

I keep having those vivid dreams and temporary erectile dysfunction might help :-0)

That surprises me. Ibuprofen is less good at reducing inflammation than aspirin. You don't need to swallow it. The aspirin is also topical when gargled, and works quickly for me, so it's hard to see how swallowing ibuprofen is more effective.

I have searched for any references to the aspirin method, and found that it is recommended by the Daily Mail, so that clinches it for me.
 Man flu - Fursty Ferret
I think ibuprofen discouraged for colds now because the inflammation it's damping down is actually the immune response that's fixing you. Paracetamol now according to doctor friend.

I knocked a cold out wivvin 24 hours once upon a time, long long ago, by *eating one fresh clove of garlic every hour on-the-hour.

*Do not try this at home!!

>>That surprises me. Ibuprofen is less good at reducing inflammation than aspirin.

I have done research on this:

Many years ago, following self-medication with gargled asprin, I was hospitalised with tonsillitis. A single (400mg) Ibuprofen tablet cured the pain (once I managed to get it down) and I was able to eat for the first time in 24 hours. (I dashed, canula-in-arm, out of hospital to the nearest restaurant.)

I was told zinc will reduce symptoms and it does seem to, but don't expect a miracle cure.

I recall hearing recently that vitamin C is no good for treating a cold, we should be taking vitamin D.

Think I'll be calling in sick for work tomorrow. head feels like it's inflated with combination of expanding foam and cotton wool.

Don't really want to do it, already had one day off this year after the shunt on the M25 and the sickness process at work is so convoluted it's almost as if it's designed to discourage you from taking time off ill.
 Man flu - Old Navy
Expanding foam reinforced with cotton wool won't make equalizing the pressure across your ear drums much fun.

We take zinc tablets it supposed to help the immune system.

Do you feel galvanised when you've had them?

The boss has got us on Vitamin D now. Latest fashion I think. Probably a good idea for me, I don't much like sun, and avoid it if I can.

I take that many tablets I rattle Manatee.>:)

I usually give the whisky bottle a good hammering if I've got that feeling that I may be coming down with something. Last time I had 'flu was in 2002, dreadful aches everywhere, I was off work for nine days and even then I felt tired and sensitive to light. I would say from start to feeling 100% again was four weeks. My missus brought me my meals and left them on the landing as she was forbidden (and didn't want) to enter the bedroom. I remember watching a lot of daytime tv and thinking how depressing it all was and couldn't wait to get back to work.
