Win 7 Desktop - Keyboard will not allow password - Dulwich Estate II
I have a Windows 7 desktop machine (as well as other stuff) and today on start up, when the screen asked for my password I found the keyboard didn't work.

The mouse was OK and I restarted using the red 'button' on the right of the screen, but again the same problem that I could not type in my password. On something like my 5th attempt the keyboard worked fine and I got into my computer.

I have now backed up my files on an external hard drive and wonder if I'm now living on borrowed time. The computer is pretty old now, the start up time (when working OK) is a couple of minutes or more and maybe it's time to get a new one rather than bother trying to fix the issues.

Morgan Computers do a range of refurbished stuff at good prices.

try a different keyboard first! - then upgrade if you fancy it ;-) best of both worlds.

Do you have any kinks in the keyboard cable?

Switch off, Unplug keyboard from system unit - put it back in & fire up the PC.

If that does not work try another keyboard & see if it works.

Are you anywhere near Berkshire? I have a PC which was my media PC (i.e. under my telly) and is a quite decent spec which I need to get round to selling, it'd be a good price but I can't tell you the detailed spec at the moment... It's been off for a year except for updating to Windows 10. It's a smaller footprint one (i.e. smaller case). I will fire it up and get more info for you if you want...

Smokie - thanks for the offer, but I'd probably want to be piccy about the specification and probably stick to Win 7.

The probelm only happened at start up today so changing the keyboard will only be a useful test when / if it fails to work again - tomorrow ?

In the meantime I have this feeling in my bones it's a software issue and something to do with a keyboard driver not loading - I'm no expert just guessing in only a very partially educated way. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing though.

So don't buy a new PC.

If it's not the keyboard then it could take time to troubleshoot. So new PC time makes sense especially because it's quite old. But the Windows 10 issue arises.

If this is a problem with a USB connected keyboard (I doubt it's a PS/2 type connector) then it's not likely to be USB (keyboard) driver related. The mouse worked. Plenty you could be doing to rule this out.

I blame Trump.

If your time is money... buy a new PC. A few hours of time = new PC surely. A no brainer.

And assuming it's USB connected, try a different socket on the computer. If you have sockets on the front, try it there as well.

My normal logon requires me to input my machine password. However today, out of the blue, the sign-on screen asked for my Microsoft account password. The only way of getting in was by inputting that.

Maybe something similar happening to the OP? Or have I picked up a virus?

I have a new laptop - HP indicated 14 firmware upgrades - 13 went fine, 14th would not load. Googled it & found a newer version of the patch which worked.

This over wrote the logon pin number & needed my MS password........then I had to go in & delete the pin number & then input my pin number - OK in the 2 weeks since.

perhaps that is why OP linked to a seller of refurb pCs including win 7 ones?

Wise decision.

I have one win 10 pro PC which allows me to specify when to check for updates. As sson as I do so, then without my permission it also downloads the updates. I cannot find any way of stopping that.

Also, mysteriously, it has a habit of resetting my privacy preferences without seeking approval.

I like to be in control.
Win 10 takes it away.

Mine (W10) went through a period of constantly switching my webcam off in the privacy settings. Every time I got a Skype video call I had to change the settings back. It seems to have stopped doing that now.

MS aren't the only ones who have a habit of switching things off.

Whenever there is an iOS update on my iPhone (no matter how small), it switches off the Personal Hotspot function in the Mobile Data settings.

rtj70 - you say don't buy a new PC.

I don't plan to. Like I said:

PS It fired up just fine today. I will play with keyboard / USB options when / if it fails again.

Copying the hard drive contents to an SSD will speed it up a lot. Assuming it remains reliable.

It's easy to migrate the content to the SSD too. Just saying.

Well it's easy if the SSD has more storage capacity than the HDD, somewhat less so if it doesn't.

My 2010 Dell machine I upgraded to a small SSD sped up a bit on boot and significantly on some applications (It's a SATA 2 machine); Spamcan Junior's new HP 280 desktop sped up considerably on boot (booted Win 10 in < 15 seconds until a W10 'up'date messed it up) and runs applications quickly, but then that's SATA 3.

So I'm saying don't expect a 'night and day' speed increase if it's an older SATA 2 machine.

I know that with Apple it is "Do it my way or take the highway".

With windows, MS had until now at least allowed a great deal of freedom for the end-users to tweak settings and generally allowed them to do most of what they wished. Win 10 has meant MS has followed Farage-Trump philosophy to "take back control".
