Vaz appointed to Justice Select Committee - Focal Point
This odious, slippery, amoral individual has been appointed, with the support of 38 Labour MPs and various front-bench Tories, to the Justice Select Committee. The Commons vote on the matter showed 201 in favour, 5 against.

As Tory MP Andrew Brigden pointed out, it is a bit rich for Vaz, whose resignation from the Home Affairs Select Committee after the rent-boy scandal indicated that in his own view he was not fit to serve on one Select Committee, to put himself forward for another - and the Justice Select Committee, of all things.

Moreover, the Metropolitan Police are still investigating Vaz in connection with an "allegation of conspiracy to supply a controlled substance".

I despair at the front of this man who seemingly knows no shame, together with the moral bankruptcy of the majority of our MPs who think it's all a good idea.

A good friend of mine is a criminal solicitor. Rarely wins a case! An incredibly laid back person ( suppose you have to be dealing with lots of scum & deviants) and only recently I saw him very animated about this person. Not in a good way.

I suppose the client's definition of win might be a non-custodial sentence or a small fine.

The Commons vote reflects the usual protocol that the parties do not oppose each other's nominees for these positions, not approval of Vaz.

It doesn't say much for the Labour party or Vaz himself that his name went forward at all. What a slimy, brazen specimen.

According to the Sun, on which I rely for this kind of scandal since the demise of the NOTW, as well as Scotland Yard considering whether to investigate the drugs and rent boys carry-on, he is also being "probed" by Leicestershire police. Oh I do hope so.

Although of a lefty lean I'm no admirer of Vaz. While the Home Affairs committee seemed to make it's mark under his Chairmanship his 'grandstanding' while doing so was egregious and at times pompous and offensive. He had to stand down given the conflict between his alleged 'interests' and the committee's remit.

On the other hand being on select committees as a working member is part of an MP's job description. Doubly so for one of Vaz's seniority and experience. He is a qualified solicitor and former justice minister and should bring something worthwhile to the committee. He shouldn't be lounging on the back benches finding time for out side business or financial interests.

The committee chair will hopefully keep KV under his beady eye and ensure he excuses himself from any work done by the committee where he might be conflicted.

Given there's a protocol about opposition nominations to select committees it looks like grandstanding on Andrew Bridgen's part to try and force a vote
