Apologies for I cannot find my subject from a year or so ago.

Latest thoughts on which sat nav please. Don't want to break the bank but it's gotta work. Free updates too ideally.

Regards, md.

Any TomTom or Garmin will work fine. Just a question of which extras you want. Personally I buy the cheapest model. It will get you from A to B

Am I wrong but wouldn't a decent Smartphone in a bracket work just as well...we used my pals IPhone earlier this year in Spain after downloading the relevant map?
Can't warrant one myself... If it's not in Yorkshire it's not worth visiting
Apart from CA, Canaries, Madeira
Oh, and Turkey ( where I use my camo phone cover)

With google maps they work incredibly well IME, and the maps are always up to date. But most seem to run out of battery quite quickly unless plugged in, and get very hot. I know a couple of people who are convinced that using high drain apps when charging has knackered their batteries.

Pre-loading the relevant section of map is a good move - reducing the power consumption, providing guidance when out of net, and conserving data allowance if done on wifi.

I'd rather have a separate device but it's a personal thing. Young(er) people don't seem to bother much with sat navs though.

My pal is 72yo. Pretty clued up on modern tech though....we are returning to Moraira for a month in Feb and plan on touring quite a lot with friends who are staying in the place next door for 3 months+.
Had a invite from a friend who has a lovely apartment in Santa Eulalia, Ibiza, so taking the car over there for a week, sailing from Denia.
I shall mention the sat nav option, we can go halves, then maybe sell it when we return?
Useful info. Gracias

If I wanted to replace mine today I'd probably go for this

There are multiple options - the Garmin 57LM with lifetime UK, Ireland and Western Europe maps is £79 (as is the version without western Europe).

I currently have an older, similar model with bluetooth for hands free phone but it's not very good at that - a bit of convergence too far. Apart from having an aversion to a small area around Jesmond/Gosforth in Newcastle where it always locks up, and very slow POI search, it's pretty good including at its main function for me which is choosing reasonable routes - i.e. a good compromise between cart tracks and diverting tens of miles to find a bit of motorway.

Lifetime maps means for whatever period they support the model for. Mine is about four years old and still updates as as far as I know.

The search function is much faster now, if the boss's newer Garmin of similar size and features is an indication.

The TomTom interface may be slightly better, but the batteries in mine always failed quickly. Perhaps they have improved.

Hard to beat Google maps for traffic, when that is likely to be an issue. My Garmin has RDS traffic, but frankly it isn't that good because it isn't timely enough Google gathers data from a lot of users online and updates incredibly quickly, and covers a lot more roads, so on long routes I usually preload the google maps and have it ready for en route checks.

But as CGN says, pick one with the features you want.
