Just got home from a long day out, and caught up with the news... how damned frightening and terrifying. last week, we saw a spat between the SA government and US/Britain/Australia after the latter nations issued a 'security alert' about possible terror attacks here. The SA Government had a wobbler, and accused them of scaremongering. Given that Cape Town has a massive gay population, and is a big 'pink' tourist destinatio, maybe the local rozzers should be concerned? Reply to this message | Report message

'Fundamentalists' of both religions claim the Bible/Koran bans the practice. Can't speak for the Koran (I've not read it) but of the Bible, only the old testament appears to ban homosexuality. However, that 'evidence' is dependant on translation, and even if if did, the same book (Leviticus 19:19, and Deuteronomy 22:11 for one) bans the wearing of mixed fibres, shellfish, pork, and black pudding (blood). Let he who is without sin cast the first stone and all that. Err, and God is love and we're all created in his image? Surly the problem here is that deranged individuals have easy access to assault rifles and ammunition. What pretext the individual chooses to mow down 50 unknown strangers is hardly relevant. Does anyone think that individual like him would not be drawn to to some bizarre cause or other? Without an assault rifle he would be a just sad and deluded and totally irrelevant person. Scum. I won't even kill a spider, let alone another person! I have some GLBT friends who still get trouble in the country and have got stick when sightseeing in the US. This is hatred and terrorism. These people were out having harmless fun and this prat thinks that he has the right to kill them because he saw a gay couple hug and kiss and didn't like it! I live near Lewes where 10 people were burnt for their religious views 500 years ago. When I was a lad I was pleased that we had moved on from the bigotry but in reality, we haven't. It is a sad world. Re Gun control. I now think that the 30 year sentence handed down to a gun runner caught in Kent recently is not enough given the carnage that these assault weapons can cause. I believe terrorism has not yet been identified as the motive, although I suppose it could have been some kind of collateral version, in which the assailant decided for himself. If the attack was primarily an anti-gay protest I can't believe at gays are not as thick on the ground in Muslim societies as elsewhere. From observation I would say this is the case in one society I know which has a large Muslim element, perhaps 50% of the population and homosexuality is actually legal in the largest Muslim society, Indonesia. The way I read it, it's not so much trying to help the victims or their loved ones, but showing solidarity with them.
