Mazda Mazda 6 - Accident Repair - Ateca chris
On Sunday i was side swiped by another vehicle, both traveling in same direction on a dual carriage way i was in left lane they were in right lane no indication just pulled in front of me hitting o/s front wing, wheel and bumper forcing me onto a grass verge and nearly up a bank
and causing themselves to lose control and ending up the bank.
Police has put other driver at fault and will recommend a drivers awareness course because they admitted to seeing a silver car in the distance and not me beside them.

Just been to Bodyshop to find out how things are progressing and been given the estimation for repair which is now awaiting a response from their insurance company.
The repair bill is £3889.81 my car is a 2008 MAZDA 6 TS2 2LTR petrol with 102900 miles.

Im now worried its going to be written off due to extra work, parts and labour
They want to remove o/s door strip, inner panel, handle, and mirror for painting which wasn't damaged, repaint bonnet which again wasn't damaged, and a new number plate which wasnt damaged, also listed
L/ Roof section surface pain
R/ Roof section surface paint
Left A-Pillar surface paint
Right A-Pillar surface paint
New wheel (that was damaged)
R/Side steering knuckle
R/Side wheel hub
Wheel bearing
New wing
New Bumper
New Headlight (that was scratch being plastic lens)
and other bits and pieces

Labour £832
Materials £1,084
Other £130
Parts £1,194
VAT £648

why cant they just replace the parts that's damaged Wing, Bumper, wheel and suspension parts why the rest?

Probably because they need to blend the colour in so it looks right. If they didn't do all of this you'd probably be complaining that they hadn't done it right, got paint on the door strip/door mirror, etc.

Anyway that's irrelevant because it will likely be written off. Even dropping the cost of fixing it to say £3000 I would imagine it is too costly. You can probably get a replacement from £3500.

>> Probably because they need to blend the colour in so it looks right.

And to also give their work a 3 or 5 year warranty, which seems the norm now with insurance related repairs.

Get a price to fix the car to your satisfaction from a known to you bodyshop.

Are you dealing with your insurer or the 3rd party insurer?

Negotiate a settlement figure for the car as a write-off.
Once agreed ask how much to buy back the written off car.

Then do the arithmetic - £payout less (scrap price + bodyshop) = £XXXX

If you want to keep the car + a few £££S in your pocket you can do a deal.

If you do not like the deal, take the write-off figure and go car shopping.

A car is written off if it is impractical, unsafe or uneconomic to repair; that's usually something around 50% of its market value. It can be less.

So, taking rtj's note about replacement costs, unless you can get the insurance-funded repairs down to about £1800, it'll be written off. And it doesn't sound like there's much chance of that, so unless you're prepared to get lesser repairs done yourself, after you've negotiated a cash settlement, on a car that will be worth sod all in the future because it'll be a CAT C write-off, then I'd prepare for a shopping trip if I were you.

If it's gets written off which is likely, how do I go about getting my private number plate back.

It's carp that a insurance company can write someone's car off who was not at fault then give them book price for it even tho cars that's are for sale are nearly 5to7 hundred pounds more.
Book price on auto trader is £3100 So I'm going to be out of pocket putting myself back into the position i was in before I got hit.

Depends how you go about claiming; like the bloke with the hat says, a 3rd party can't write off your car, if you go through your own insurance probably game over.

If the car has an MoT you could put it on retention immediately (is my understanding).

If the MoT has accidently run out, just treat it as reminder for next time a test is due.

Look on the bright side it could have lost you a lot more! ( assuming that you do not have one of the following plates).

1. '25 O': £518,000
The priciest ever sold by the DVLA, bought by Ferrari dealer John Collins in 2014. The plate is now thought to take pride of place on a Ferrari 250SWB once owned by Eric Clapton, worth around £10million.
2. 'F 1': £440,000
The previous record holder, the initials of Formula 1 were bought by Bradford businessman Afzal Khan in 2008. The digits were then assigned to his McLaren-Mercedes SLR.
3. 'S 1': £404,000
Claimed to be Scotland's first ever number plate, it was bought back in 2008 by an anonymous bidder who claimed the digits would be fixed to an old Skoda!
4. '1 D': £352,000
Despite the obvious reference to the pop group sensation One Direction, this plate was bought a year before their formation in Warwickshire by Lebanese businessman Nabil Bishara.
5. 'M 1': £331,000
Bought in 2006 by mobile phone businessman Mike McCoomb who claimed it was for his 10 year-old son!
6. 'VIP 1': £285,000
Owned by billionaire Chelsea FC boss Roman Abramovich, it was once placed on the Popemobile for His Holiness' visit to Ireland.
7. '51 NGH': £254,000
A popular name in the Sikh community, 'Singh' was sold in the UK in 2006.
8. '1 RH': £247,000
This plate sold in 2006 for 30 times its estimate to determined businessman Robert Harverson.
9. 'K1 NGS': £231,000
A royal plate believed to have been bought by an an Arab Sultan in 1993.
10. '1 O': £170,000
Just a binary number and the letter 'O', this minimalist plate was purchased in Northamptonshire in 2009.

You could try and use second hand parts, I've done it in the past. I think the phrase was green parts. It cut the cost massively and kept the car on the road. Also helped no doubt it was a local garage rather than a network type of body shop.

The most important question already asked but not answered is are you claiming off your insurance or claiming against the third party (who will pass it to their insurer). If the former, then you are in a weak position, but if the latter, they pretty much have to pay up any reasonable cost to make your car as it was before their policyholder's mistake. If the garage can repair repair it because it is possible and the price is reasonable then they must pay it.

Sorry to hear about your car Chris, hope you get it resolved to your satisfaction.

Don't you like the Focus LL or are you just in Del Boy mode?

;-)
Mazda Mazda 6 - Accident Repair - Ateca chris
Will be claiming off third party's insurance as they have admitted liability.
Mazda Mazda 6 - Accident Repair - legacylad
Focus is absolutely fine. Obviously a very different driving experience. Far more practical. I'm really enjoying ragging the a*** off it, much as I would a Panda. I ver much doubt I could get such value for money again in the short term.
 Mazda Mazda 6 - Accident Repair - Runfer D'Hills
I quite enjoy driving a low powered car to its limits. Try that in a high powered one and you inevitably come into too close proximity with a hedge or a judge eventually.
Mazda Mazda 6 - Accident Repair - legacylad
I have no intention of getting anywhere close to its limits, especially with the ditch finder tyres!
By accelerating hard I can keep up with traffic, and hopefully blowing any nasties out of the exhaust. Once up to cruising speed, an indicated 85 ish on two & three lanes, I keep reaching for a non existent sixth, but that's my fault and the trip ting is still showing 59 mpg!

As mentioned previously, a pal offered me £2500 a few days ago. Think I'll keep it until the right motor comes along. Whatever that may be now I have expanded my horizons.
 Mazda Mazda 6 - Accident Repair - Runfer D'Hills
Y'see, what you could do now, is buy a well kept, possibly old-ish, but well kept, BMW 330 convertible as well and keep the Focus as your almost free practical hack...

Oh wait !

;-)
Mazda Mazda 6 - Accident Repair - legacylad
Or I could get a proper fun two seater...
Any suggestions?

In that case, as has been said, you are entitled to be put back into the same position as you were before the crash.

The insurers will have to meet the cost of repair at the repairers of your choosing. As long as your claimed amount is genuine and has not been inflated in any way the the third party and therefore his insurer is liable for the full amount.

There is no question of the car being "written off" unless you agree to a cash settlement rather than a repair.
 Mazda Mazda 6 - Accident Repair - Runfer D'Hills
That's good to know CG. I didn't know you could claim other than through your own insurance company.

>> If it's gets written off which is likely, how do I go about getting my private number plate back.

So does a car's value for insurance purposes included private registration plates? I would hope not. But I can see why an insurer with a car written on with a valued plate would want to keep it for obvious reasons.

I ask because if in an accident the private plate made no difference. If it's stolen (and valid MOT) and never recovered you can get the plate back.
