Trying to install Printer Driver (HP laserjet 4L ). Windows finds the software online, downloads it, and starts to install, then it fails with an "Access Denied" pop-up. I have full administrator rights to my account, so what else do I need? - everything thing else I install goes on no problem.

Any idea's welcome! - printer too good just to bin, and yes I've tried "Compatibility" mode - makes no difference. (Win 10)

Can you see the downloaded file in your downloads directory (wherever that is - check your browser's settings if you don't know)? If so, try right-clicking on it and 'run as administrator'. I have to do this every time there's an update for my Tomtom GPS watch.

Yep! I have, makes no difference, been searching Google tube all morning, tried a few things, but I'm still not "Important" enough to be allowed to install a printer! - going to borrow a Friends Epsom later and see if it allows me to install that! - Bah!

Try temporarily disabling the firewall or AV and then Installing the driver again as Administator.

If you've updated to Windows10, this may help:

I had this once but damned if I can remember exactly what it was.

I vaguely think it was a printer too old for the operating system and I had to manually install it with a driver I downloaded.

Sorry not to be much more help than that.

Printer driver.

I have an HP 1010 laser printer. I looked for the Win-10 driver. Windows -10 listed HP 1010 but when I looked there was not one. Seems HP want you to buy another printer. Some kind soul, may be on here, told me the HP 3055 driver would work. At the install, I renamed it HP 3055/1010 PCL5. Have used it for a few months now. All OK.

Just went to a site to purchase toner for my HP1010, at the site below, and guess what, it is listed as compatible with the 3055. Try the same for yours and try that driver/s ?

Well, the Epsom went on ok no problems, so I think the old Laserjet (like suggested) may be too old, so replacement imminent! - Strangely, Win 10 says Drivers not installed, but that Drive Easy app reports that the laserjet drivers are up to date, and that the Radeon card divers are out of date despite the fact they are the latest ones!

Thanks for all the suggestions folks!

The LaserJet 4 printer is a PCL5 printer. You'd have thought there would be a generic PCL5 driver that would be available and work.

Question - how is the printer connected? Wasn't the Laserjet 4 a parallel port printer with an add-in card for Ethernet connectivity?

Yes, its connected via parallel port (LPT1) - Can't see any Ethernet ports on it, may try it via a USB/PARALLEL adapter though, to see if it will install via usb seek. Nearly resigned to buying a new one now, tis getting tiresome all this faffing! ;-)

The HP LJ 4L was first sold in 1993. Maybe it is time to buy a new one which will be more compact, quicker, higher resolution, etc.
