So finished my dinner including a couple of nice glasses of red, went onto Twitter and realised that the Gumball 3000 rally guys would all be passing within 3 miles of my door!

Missus refused to give me a lift!

Oh well, am sure there will be plenty of video online soon!

Hardly surprising if you drank her wine too.

Incidentally, why does that sentence begin with 'so'? It's a verbal tic that's creeping into people's writing as well. Suppose it's always happened and this is just the latest.

Isn't it just the "I'm about to say something so pin back yer lugholes" preface to the start of a conversation?

Not required in writing, unless the intention is a conversational style.

How's that for defence Bobby?

Full credit for not saying "And you know what?" It's only a matter of time before I really upset somebody who says that.

Or "Listen!". That really is an annoying tic.

I might try to get the boss to use "So (pause)" before she issues her orders. She has a tendency to launch into them before I'm really listening, often necessitating a repeat.

Good point and I never even noticed that I had typed that!

But I do hate it when I hear news programmes on the radio and they ask guests questions and they start their answer with "so".

I sympathise; much as I also dislike the habit I've found myself doing it too. I suspect it's another creeping Americanism.
