The emmissions warning light has come on, along with the message "EMMISSIONS WORKSHOP". The car starts first time but the tickover is rough, this clears as soon as the engine is accellerated and ticks over fine from there on. The engine code is BFQ. The car has done 53000 miles and is an automatic. Thanks in anticipation.

What are the codes it's throwing up?
If you don't have a code reader already the main options are:
1) dealer or indy, aim for circa £40 with bartering
2) Buy a fault code reader, VAG specific units can be had for £30 delivered and will also read ABS, Airbags etc. as well as the engine control unit. Generic units can be had for £20 delivered but will only read the engine (which is fine for your current issue but not as good a buy long term in case an ABS sensor dies in future etc.) See ebay or google for "gendan".
3) Find someone local on one of the owners club boards to read the codes for you, normal currency is beer stamps but some charge £10-£20. Try uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/142754.aspx and download the excel file from the first post or try the excellent briskoda group (they're open to VW's not just Skodas) briskoda.net/forums/topic/74720-vag-com-diagnostic-system-vcds-owners-map/
